How to access settings in Microsoft Teams to disable GPU hardware acceleration

I am experiencing flickering screens when sharing one of my screens during Microsoft Teams meetings. From what I understand, disabling GPU hardware acceleration in Teams may fix the issue. The issue began when I updated to an AMD Radeon graphics card.

    Hi Vic Beaumont

I understand how distracting screen flickering can be during a meeting, especially when it started right after changing the graphics card. Please reply with the following details, but do not include personal information or meeting links:

    • Windows version: Windows 10 or Windows 11
    • Teams desktop app version
    • AMD Radeon graphics card model
    • AMD driver version
    • Whether the flickering happens only when sharing the full screen
    • Whether the flickering also happens when sharing one window
    • Whether Teams on the web has the same problem

    Meanwhile, follow these steps:

    1) Check whether the GPU hardware acceleration option is available

In the newer Microsoft Teams app, the old Disable GPU hardware acceleration setting may no longer appear under Settings > General.

    2) Reset the Microsoft Teams app

Since the flickering happens during screen sharing, first reset Teams so it can rebuild its local app data.

    To do this:

    • Close Microsoft Teams completely.
    • Open Windows Settings.
    • Go to Apps > Installed apps.
    • Search for Microsoft Teams.
    • Select More options (...) > Advanced options.
    • Select Reset.
    • Reopen Teams and test screen sharing again.

    3) Test Teams on the web as a workaround

To confirm whether the issue is limited to the desktop app, please test Teams on the web: https://teams.microsoft.com/.

You can try this by doing the following:

    • Open Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome.
    • Go to Teams on the web.
    • Join a meeting.
    • Test screen sharing again.

If screen sharing works normally in the browser, the issue is more likely related to the Teams desktop app, the graphics driver, or the way the desktop app is capturing the display.

    4) Troubleshoot the AMD display driver

Since the issue began after switching to an AMD Radeon graphics card, please check the display driver. Check whether Task Manager flickers, then update, roll back, or reinstall the display driver depending on the result: Troubleshoot screen flickering in Windows | Microsoft Support

    Please try these checks:

    • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
    • Check whether Task Manager flickers too.
      • If Task Manager flickers, the issue is likely related to the display driver.
      • If Task Manager does not flicker, the issue may be caused by an app conflict.
    • Open Device Manager > Display adapters.
    • Right-click the AMD Radeon display adapter.
    • Try one of the following:
      • Update driver
      • Roll Back Driver, if the issue started after a recent driver update
      • Uninstall device, then restart Windows so the driver can be reinstalled
    • You can also press Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver, then test Teams screen sharing again.

    5) Try sharing a window instead of the full screen

If the issue happens only when sharing the entire monitor, try sharing a single app window instead.

Please tell me how it goes. If the problem persists, please don’t hesitate to reply to this thread and I will be happy to help. Have a lovely day!
