Hello,

I am a staff member at a public university, and I am trying to activate Windows on our university computers using the original product keys that came with each device.

However, I have been unable to activate Windows with these original keys. I would appreciate your assistance in identifying the cause of the issue and advising me on how to complete the activation successfully.

If you need any additional information, such as the product key (partial), device model, or the exact error message, I will be happy to provide it.

Thank you for your support.

Hello Hudson,

Thank you for posting question on Microsoft Windows Forum!

Based on the issue description. The problem of activation is highly probably caused by a mismatch between the original OEM product keys and the current Windows edition installed on your university computers.

Since OEM keys are tied to a specific edition (e.g., Windows 11 Pro, Windows 11 Education, or Windows 11 Home). If your university uses a customized imaging/deployment tool (like MDT or SCCM) that installed a different edition than the one printed on the sticker (or stored in the BIOS), the key will be rejected with error codes like 0xC004F210 or 0x803FA071. Open Command Prompt on affected device and type the command slmgr /dli and press Enter. Look at the text next to "Description". It will say exactly which edition is currently installed. If it says "Pro" but your sticker says "Home" (or vice versa), you must reinstall Windows using the correct ISO for the edition your key belongs to.

Alternatively, you can go to Settings > System > Activation and confirm which edition is installed. If the edition does not match the OEM license (like Home vs. Pro Education), you must reinstall the correct edition.

Another point worth mentioning here is that if using Windows Pro Education. This edition requires a volume license or institutional key provided by Microsoft under your university’s agreement. It is recommended to contact your university’s IT licensing administrator to obtain the correct activation method.
