Bluetooth device reconnection

A recent "simplification" of the Bluetooth device UI has made it very difficult to use my computer. I use a Bluetooth headset to call into meetings for work. I also use that headset to listen to music on my phone. Once I have disconnected the device from my computer to my phone, the only way to reconnect it is to unpair the device (very hard to find) and then go through the pairing process again. There seems to be no way to reconnect a paired device in the menu anymore. What is the solution to this VERY COMMON use case of connecting an already paired device?

    Welcome Matthew Fox,

I understand how frustrating it can be when your Bluetooth headset remains paired with Windows, but after switching it to another device such as your phone, you can no longer reconnect it from Windows without removing and pairing it again.

Before proceeding, could you please clarify:

    • Which Windows version are you using (Windows 10 or Windows 11)?
    • Does the headset still appear under Settings > Bluetooth & devices after you disconnect it from the PC?

In the meantime, you can try these steps below to troubleshoot the issue:

Option 1: Reconnect from Bluetooth settings

    • Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices
    • Select your headset from the device list
    • Check whether a Connect option appears when the device is powered on and disconnected from the phone

Option 2: Disable Bluetooth on the phone temporarily

    • Turn off Bluetooth on the phone
    • Wait a few seconds and check whether Windows reconnects automatically

Option 3: Restart the Bluetooth service

    • Press Windows + R > Type services.msc and press Enter
    • Locate Bluetooth Support Service
    • Right-click it and select Restart

Option 4: Remove stale Bluetooth connections

    • Open Device Manager from the Start menu
    • Expand Bluetooth
    • Right-click the headset entry and select Uninstall device
    • Restart the computer and allow Windows to rediscover the device

Option 5: Run the Bluetooth troubleshooter

    • Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters
    • Run the Bluetooth troubleshooter and apply any recommended fixes

I hope the steps above help you deal with your issue.
