How to fix a damaged document in Visio, nothing is opening properly. It asks to repair the document, then closes the application entirely no matter which Visio document I am trying to open.

Microsoft 365 and Office | Visio | Other | Windows

    Hi Lesniewski

Sorry you’re going through this, and I appreciate you sharing what happened.

As a forum moderator, I genuinely wish I could directly access your account or review the backend systems to diagnose and resolve this issue for you. However, our role here is limited to providing general guidance by offering clear next steps, sharing applicable resources, and directing you to the appropriate support channels so you can work with the right team to investigate further.

Based on your description, since Visio asks to repair the document and then closes the application regardless of which Visio file you try to open, this may not be caused by one specific damaged document. It may be related to the Visio application itself, such as an add-in conflict, corrupted user settings, or an issue with the local Office/Visio installation.

Since you haven’t specified your account type (work/school vs. personal), I may not be able to provide an exact solution yet. Assuming you’re using a work account, please try the steps below.

1/ Open Visio in Safe Mode

    • Press Windows + R.
    • Type visio /safe.
    • Press Enter.

If Visio opens successfully in Safe Mode, the issue may be caused by an add-in.

    • Go to File > Options > Add-ins and disable any third-party or unnecessary add-ins.
    • Then restart Visio normally and test again.

2/ Run an Online Repair for Visio/Microsoft 365

    • Go to Windows Settings > Apps > Installed Apps.
    • Locate Microsoft Visio or Microsoft 365.
    • Select Modify.
    • Choose Online Repair.
    • Follow the prompts to complete the repair.

Online Repair may take some time and requires an internet connection.

    3/ Update Office/Visio

If Visio does not stay open, you can open another Office app such as Word or Excel, then:

    • Go to File > Account.
    • Select Update Options.
    • Choose Update Now.

After the update completes, please restart the device and try opening the Visio files again.

4/ Test the files on another device if available

    • If possible, please try opening the same Visio files on another computer with Visio installed. This will help confirm whether the issue is related to the files themselves or the local Visio installation on the current device.

Please understand that our initial reply may not always immediately resolve the issue. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

I hope this information is helpful. Should you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please feel free to share them in the comment below. I'm very happy to help.

I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts.
