Product: Microsoft Office Home and Business 2021 (Click-to-Run)

Feature: SharePoint Export to Excel (.iqy / owssvr.dll)

Observed behavior:

  • Microsoft Office Home and Business 2021 (older build) – Works correctly.
  • Microsoft Office Home and Business 2021 Version 2606 (Build 20131.20112)Does not work.
  • Microsoft Office Home and Business 2019 Version 2606 (Build 20131.20112)Works correctly.

Error message:

"An unexpected error has occurred. Changes to your data cannot be saved."

Additional observations:

  • With Version 2602, the authentication prompt is displayed, but after successful authentication the import fails with the error above.
  • With Version 2606, the authentication prompt no longer appears in some cases, and Excel immediately displays the error message.

Testing performed:

  • The same SharePoint site, the same .iqy file, and the same user account were used in all tests.
  • Office Home and Business 2019 and Office Home and Business 2021 were tested on the same Windows environment.
  • The issue only occurs with Office Home and Business 2021 after updating to Version 2606 (Build 20131.20112).

Expected behavior: When opening the SharePoint-exported .iqy file, Excel should:

  1. Open the workbook.
  2. Display the external data connection security prompt.
  3. Prompt the user for authentication (if required).
  4. Import the SharePoint list successfully.

Instead, Excel displays the error:

*"An unexpected error has occurred. Changes to your data cannot be saved."*Product: Microsoft Office Home and Business 2021 (Click-to-Run) Feature: SharePoint Export to Excel (.iqy / owssvr.dll) Observed behavior:

I can confirm the same situation for Microsoft® Excel® for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2608 Build 16.0.20326.20100) 64-bit. When downgraded to version Microsoft® Excel® for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2608 Build 16.0.20228.20190) 64-bit problem gone !

    best regards
