Dear Microsoft Support Team,

I am writing to seek clarification and assistance regarding a keyboard issue with my Surface Laptop 7 Intel version.

Approximately two weeks ago, several keys on my laptop keyboard — specifically A, G, P, Y, and 7 — suddenly became unresponsive. The issue occurs most of the time, and these keys are now frequently unusable. I contacted an authorized after-sales service provider in Beijing, China, and was advised to mail the device to Microsoft China’s repair center in Suzhou. I was also informed that the computer would need to be wiped if repaired, that the repair process may take around 20 working days, and that no replacement or temporary device would be provided during the repair period.

I purchased this Surface Laptop 7 in December 2025 for approximately RMB 17,000. Given that the device has been used for only about seven to eight months, I find it very concerning and unusual that several specific keys would fail in this way.

I later found related discussions online, including the following Reddit thread:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/1rn1f19/surface_laptop_7_keyboard_issues/?tl=zh-hans&sort=confidence

In that discussion, multiple users appear to report similar keyboard failures, and the affected keys are often the same or highly similar, including A, G, P, Y, and 7. This makes me concerned that the issue may not be an isolated case, but could potentially be related to a manufacturing defect, a design flaw, or a software/firmware update affecting the keyboard.

I would therefore like to ask Microsoft to clarify the following:

  1. Has Microsoft received similar reports regarding the Surface Laptop 7 Intel version keyboard, especially involving the A, G, P, Y, and 7 keys?
  2. Is this issue currently being investigated as a potential hardware defect, batch issue, or software/firmware-related problem?
  3. If this is a known or recurring issue, can Microsoft provide a more efficient warranty solution, such as replacement, expedited repair, or another appropriate remedy?
  4. Is it necessary to wipe the entire device for this type of keyboard repair, and are there any options to avoid data loss?
  5. Considering the relatively short period of use and the high purchase price, can Microsoft offer a temporary replacement device or alternative support during the repair period?

I have been a Microsoft Surface user and expected a premium level of reliability and after-sales support from a device in this price range. I hope Microsoft can provide a clear explanation and a reasonable solution for this issue.

Thank you for your attention. I look forward to your reply.

Reboot into UEFI (Power + Volume Up, hold until logo, release at UEFI screen) and test those same keys there. If they still fail in UEFI, it's hardware — the repair center is your only real option. If they work fine in UEFI but fail in Windows, it's software/driver-level, and a clean boot or full OS reset (not a full wipe via mail-in repair) might fix.

Also worth running the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit's keyboard test if you haven't already — it'll usually tell you definitively whether it's flagging a hardware fault.
