How can I disable or hide the built-in Microsoft Teams “Meet” app for students?

I am a Teams administrator in an education tenant. I am trying to prevent students from using the built-in Meet app in Microsoft Teams, mainly to stop students from creating/scheduling meetings or having unsupervised private meetings with other students.

Issue

Students can still see the Meet app under the “…” / More apps menu in Teams.

I have already removed it from the pinned app rail using an App Setup policy, but it still appears under More apps.

I also cannot manage the app through PowerShell or find it in Teams Admin Center.

App details

PowerShell can find the app with Get-TeamsApp:

$MeetApp = Get-TeamsApp -DisplayName "Meet"
$MeetApp | Format-List Id,DisplayName,DistributionMethod

Output:

Id                 : 
DisplayName        : Meet
DistributionMethod : store

But when I try to inspect it using Get-M365TeamsApp, I receive:

Get-M365TeamsApp -Id

Output:

Code: NotAllowed
Message: This app is not available for admin management, or the app id

Also, searching Teams Admin Center → Teams apps → Manage apps for Meet does not show the app.

Student policies already configured

The test student has the following policies applied:

It is configured as an allow-list policy:

DefaultCatalogAppsType : AllowedAppList
GlobalCatalogAppsType  : AllowedAppList
PrivateCatalogAppsType : AllowedAppList

The intention is that students are locked to an approved list of apps and all other Microsoft, third-party, and custom apps are blocked.

Meeting Policy

The student Meeting policy is:

CCM-Students-Meeting

Relevant meeting creation settings are set to prevent students from creating or scheduling meetings:

Question

Is the Meet app treated as a protected/core Teams experience that cannot be hidden or blocked through normal Teams App Setup, App Permission, App Centric Management, or Get-M365TeamsApp / Update-M365TeamsApp controls?

If it can be disabled for students, what is the supported admin method to do this?

If it cannot be hidden, what is the correct supported way to ensure students cannot actually create, schedule, or use meetings through the Meet app?

In this case, even when meeting scheduling is disabled via the assigned Teams meeting policy, students will still see the Calendar and the “New meeting” button in the Teams interface. However, those controls are governed by policy in the background, not by UI visibility.

Although the option is visible, the policy prevents the action from completing. For example, students may still be able to open the meeting creation window, but they typically won’t be able to invite participants or successfully schedule/send the meeting.

At this point, based on everything you’ve shared, your configuration looks correct and aligns with Microsoft’s recommended approach for restricting students.

Given that, if students are still able to create or schedule meetings despite the meeting policies being disabled, and the Meet app still appears, I would recommend opening a support request with Microsoft so the engineering team can investigate your tenant in more depth. They can validate whether the policies are being applied correctly, check for any service-side limitations, and confirm if this is a known issue or requires escalation.

You can create a support ticket from the Microsoft 365 Admin Center by going to Help & support, describing the issue, and selecting Contact support. When submitting the request, it would help to include details such as affected users, screenshots of the behavior (especially from the Meet app or calendar), and confirmation of the policies assigned to those users.
