BitLocker encryption cannot be bypassed. If a Surface Pro is asking for the BitLocker recovery key and the key is not available, there are only two options:
- Try all possible locations for the recovery key
- If ever signed in with a work or school account, check if the key is stored there:
- From another device, go to https://aka.ms/aadrecoverykey
- Sign in with the work or school account
- Select Devices, expand the device, then select View BitLocker Keys and match the Key ID.
- If a personal Microsoft account was used, sign in at https://account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey and look for the device and matching Key ID.
- Check any printouts or notes where the recovery key might have been printed or written down.
- Check any USB flash drive where the key might have been saved as a text file.
- If the device is or was managed by an organization (company/school), contact its IT support; the key may be stored in their systems.
- If ever signed in with a work or school account, check if the key is stored there:
- If the recovery key cannot be found anywhere
- BitLocker is designed so that without the recovery key, the encrypted data cannot be accessed by anyone, including Microsoft support.
- In this case, the only option is to reset or reimage the Surface using a recovery image, which erases all data on the drive:
- From another computer, download a Surface recovery image and create a USB recovery drive (see the Surface Recovery Image link in the context).
- Boot the Surface from the USB recovery drive and use the recovery options to reset or reinstall Windows.
There is no supported way to “fix” BitLocker or unlock the Surface Pro without the valid BitLocker recovery key. If the key cannot be located using the methods above, data on the device will be lost when it is reset or reimaged.
