Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Follow these steps to get past the code loop and regain access to the school account:
- Try a different MFA method
- On the sign-in screen where the code is requested, look for a link such as “Sign in another way” or similar.
- Select another method that is already registered (for example, office phone, SMS, or email) and complete sign-in that way.
- If no alternative method appears, the account has only the Authenticator method configured and an administrator must help.
- Check for common verification-code delivery issues
- If using SMS or email as backup methods, verify that:
- The phone number or email shown (masked) is correct.
- The phone can receive SMS from unknown numbers and the inbox is not full.
- The verification email is not in the junk/spam folder and that messages from @accountprotection.microsoft.com are allowed.
- Avoid repeatedly requesting codes; excessive requests can cause Microsoft to temporarily block sending new codes due to suspected unusual activity.
- If using SMS or email as backup methods, verify that:
- If Authenticator is not set up correctly
- If Authenticator shows an error like “go to aka.ms/mfasetup” or similar, it means the account is not fully registered with a strong authentication token.
- In that case, an administrator for the school (Microsoft Entra / Azure AD admin) must:
- Allow registration of Microsoft Authenticator for the account (check Conditional Access / Security Information Registration policies).
- If necessary, clear or reset the user’s MFA registration so it can be set up again.
- If multiple sign-in attempts have already been made
- Repeated failed attempts can trigger Microsoft Entra multifactor protections and temporarily block further attempts.
- Wait before trying again, or use a different MFA method if one is available.
- If suspicious activity is suspected, the school’s IT/Help desk should review Microsoft Entra sign-in logs and MFA configuration.
- When no method works
- If Authenticator never receives prompts, no codes arrive by SMS/email, and there is no “Sign in another way” option, only the organization’s IT Help desk or Microsoft Entra administrator can:
- Clear the MFA settings for the school account.
- Require re-registration of MFA so Authenticator can be set up again.
- Support agents cannot send verification codes or bypass security info directly; this must be handled by the school’s admin.
- If Authenticator never receives prompts, no codes arrive by SMS/email, and there is no “Sign in another way” option, only the organization’s IT Help desk or Microsoft Entra administrator can:
