Using classic Outlook for Windows in educational settings
Follow these steps to restore access to the mailbox.
- Close and restart Outlook
- Fully close Outlook and any other Office apps.
- Reopen Outlook and try launching the mailbox again.
- If a hosted or embedded Outlook app (like To Do or another pane) shows a blank screen, restarting Outlook often clears the issue.
- Clear cached storage for the Outlook add-in sign-in window If the blank screen appears when opening a Dynamics 365 or similar Outlook add-in sign-in popup:
- Open Outlook on the web (OWA) or classic Outlook desktop.
- Open the add-in that triggers the sign-in popup.
- Right-click inside the add-in and select Inspect to open Developer Tools.
- Go to the Application tab.
- Under Storage, select Local Storage and delete all stored data.
- Select Session Storage and delete all stored data.
- Close Developer Tools.
- Reopen the add-in; if the authentication window appears again, repeat the same Local/Session Storage deletion inside that window.
- Close and reopen Outlook, then complete sign-in when prompted.
- If using the new Outlook for Windows If the blank popup occurs in the new Outlook for Windows:
- Ensure Outlook is fully closed in Task Manager.
- Press WIN+R and run:
olk.exe -devtools. - Use Developer Tools as above to clear Local Storage and Session Storage for the add-in and authentication window.
- Restart Outlook and sign in again.
- If Outlook on the web shows “random coding”
- This can indicate the mailbox or Outlook web session is not loading correctly.
- Sign out of all Microsoft sessions in the browser.
- Clear the browser cache (Ctrl+Shift+Delete → Clear now).
- Open a new InPrivate/Incognito window (Ctrl+Shift+N) and go to Outlook on the web again.
- If the mailbox still will not load, contact the institution’s Microsoft 365/Exchange administrator, as the mailbox may be disabled or misconfigured even if the account sign-in still works.
- If using Outlook mobile as a workaround
- Install the latest Outlook mobile app and sign in there while troubleshooting desktop/web issues.
- If sign-in fails on mobile, use the Microsoft sign-in helper or password reset tools linked in the Outlook mobile sign-in help article.
If access is still blocked after these steps, the college’s IT or Microsoft 365 admin must check whether the mailbox is disabled and re-enable it so Outlook and OWA can load it again.
