They can't be unfavorited, or removed in any way, much like this problem. However, outlook.exe /resetnavpane doesn't work in the long term. It goes away for a bit, but they eventually come back.
I'm using Outlook 356 on Windows 11. All my email comes through my university's 365/sharepoint/exchange thing.

    Dear @Miranda, Alex,

I understand how frustrating it is when these Group folders keep reappearing in your Favorites section even after trying the /resetnavpane command.

This issue occurs because of a sync conflict between Outlook Desktop and Outlook on the Web (OWA). When you are added to a Microsoft 365 Group, the server-side settings sometimes automatically favorite the group, causing the desktop client to repeatedly pull them back down into your view.

Please try the following solutions to permanently remove them:

In the classic Outlook interface, please check the Favorites section and right-click on the group you want to remove.User's image

Step 1: Remove from Favorites via Outlook on the Web (OWA)

If you don't see the remove button or can't remove it as shown in the example image above, try removing it through Outlook web. Because server-side cloud settings override your local desktop applications, deleting them through a web browser will usually prevent them from reappearing.

    1. Log into your university email via Outlook on the Web
    2. Look at the left-hand navigation pane and expand the Favorites section.
    3. Right-click on the problematic Group folders and select Remove from Favorites (or click the star icon next to them).
    4. Restart your Outlook Desktop application.

Step 2: Clear the Local Outlook Cache (Force Sync)

If the folders still reappear after fixing it on the web, your local Outlook profile cache might be stubborn and needs to be forced to read the new server settings.

    1. Close Outlook completely.
    2. Press Windows Key + R, type outlook.exe /cleanviews and hit Enter.
    3. If that doesn't clear it, go to File > Account Settings > Account Settings in Outlook.
    4. Select your email account, click Change, and uncheck Use Cached Exchange...
    5. Restart Outlook to force it to read directly from the freshly updated web server, then re-enable Cached Exchange Mode if you prefer to keep your mail cached locally. User's image

    Step 3: Create new profile

Your current profile may contain legacy settings causing synchronization conflicts. Creating a fresh profile is the most effective way to stop the issue.

    1. Close Outlook completely.
    2. Open Control Panel > Search for Mail > Select Show Profiles.
    3. Click Add, name the new profile (e.g., "Work New"), and follow the prompts to add your email account.
    4. Under "Always use this profile," select your new profile and click OK.
    5. Restart Outlook.

If the groups keep reappearing, contact your university's administrator to remove you from the group and add you back to see if the problem persists.

Please let me know if removing them via the web interface successfully stops them from reappearing.
