A family of Microsoft relational database management systems designed for ease of use.
For this issue, first confirm whether the problem is with Microsoft Access itself or with the disk/drive:
- Verify the flash disk/drive
- Make sure the USB drive is fully inserted and detected by Windows (it should appear in File Explorer with a drive letter).
- If Windows shows an error like “Disk not ready” or the drive does not appear, fix the drive issue first (try another USB port, another PC, or another flash disk).
- Check that Access starts without using the flash disk
- Open Access directly from the Start menu.
- If Access shows an error when starting (for example, configuration or update issues), install the latest Office/Access updates. Many Access issues described in the documentation are resolved by updating to a fixed build via File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
- If Access only fails when opening a database on the flash disk
- Copy the database file (.mdb or .accdb) from the flash disk to the local drive (for example, Documents) and open it from there.
- If the file still does not open and Access reports errors or stops responding, the database may be corrupted. In that case, the usual remedy is to restore the most recent good backup of the database.
- If Access shows a “Disk not ready” type error
- This indicates Windows cannot read the specified drive. Ensure a readable disk is inserted and the drive door/connection is closed and secure, then try again.
If none of these steps help, provide the exact error message shown when Access “is not working” so the failure point (Access startup, disk access, or database corruption) can be identified more precisely.
