Adding a family member to my Microsoft Account

I added my mother-on-law to my Microsoft Family account. I sent her the invite, she accepted, but still can't gain access. What are we doing wrong? Do I remove her and try again? If so, how do I remove her?

Hello, good day and thanks for your question. My apologies and I understand that you have encountered an issue with the Microsoft 365 Family subscription that you have shared with your mother-in-law.

If you have already invited her and it was accepted, you can also check and confirm it on her account at account.microsoft.com/services from a browser and login with the Microsoft account to see if it is reflecting from there.

Please logout and login again on any Microsoft 365 app (e.g from Word > click on File > Account > Sign out/Sign in (ensure that the correct account is being used) or Update License) and see how it goes.

After someone accepts a Microsoft family group invitation, there are two separate things to check:

    1. Confirm the family group membership
      1. Sign in with an organizer account at https://family.microsoft.com.
      2. On the family page, verify that the mother‑in‑law shows as a regular member (not “Pending member”).
      3. If the invite still shows as pending, cancel and resend it:
        • At the bottom of the family member page, locate the Pending member entry.
        • Select More > Cancel invite.
        • Send a new invitation and have her accept it again.
    2. Confirm Microsoft 365 Family sharing (if the issue is subscription access) If the problem is that she doesn’t see or can’t use Microsoft 365 apps, accepting the family group invite alone is not enough. The subscription must also be shared and accepted:
      1. The subscription owner signs in to the Microsoft account dashboard and opens the Microsoft 365 Family subscription sharing page (for example via View sharing in the subscription area).
      2. Check that:
        • The subscription is active and has shares remaining.
        • Her account is listed under people the subscription is shared with.
      3. If she is listed but hasn’t accepted the sharing invite, have her open her email and accept the Microsoft 365 sharing invitation.
      4. If necessary, stop sharing and re‑share to her account, then have her accept again.

How to remove her from the family group (if you want to start over)

    1. Sign in at https://family.microsoft.com with an organizer account.
    2. Find her name in the family list.
    3. Select the three dots ( … ) next to her name.
    4. Choose Remove from family group and confirm.
    5. Send a new family invitation if you want to add her again.

Note: Removing someone from the family group also removes their access to shared Microsoft 365 Family benefits and other Family Safety features. If the goal is only to fix subscription access, it may be enough to adjust sharing from the subscription dashboard instead of removing her from the family group.
