SharePoint Document Library tabs in Teams channels intermittently not loading or showing not updated content in tabs

We are experiencing an ongoing issue (approximately 1 month) where SharePoint Document Library tabs added to Microsoft Teams channels are intermittently failing to load or displaying outdated/cached documents for many users across our organization.

Symptoms:

  • The SharePoint Document Library tab inside a Teams channel either does not load at all, or shows documents from another tab that was opened when navigating to another tab, etc...
  • The same library opens and displays correctly when accessed directly via SharePoint Online in a browser
  • The issue is intermittent — it works sometimes, but fails frequently
  • Multiple users across different channels and teams are affected

One of the users affected uses version 202403.12 (or so we see).

Does this has to do with caching? Or older versions? Is maybe working on the browser for now a workaround?

Thanks for the info.

    Hello @Aron Beyens,

Thanks for raising this, and for providing the detailed description of the behavior you’re seeing.

I’d like to clarify that as a forum moderator, I do not have access to advanced tools, or contact Microsoft Support on your behalf. Please consider me an end user as well, providing guidance based on experience and documented processes.

I’ve tested this on my side using the Teams desktop app on Windows (version 26106.1906.4665.7308), and I’m not currently able to reproduce the issue, the SharePoint document library tabs are loading and updating as expected.

I’ve also checked the Microsoft service health dashboard and available resources on my end, and at this time I’m not seeing any active advisories or known incidents related to SharePoint document library tabs in Teams.

To help narrow this down and potentially resolve it, you could try the following steps:

    1. Clear the Teams cache

This can help remove any stale or corrupted local data that may be affecting how tabs load or refresh.

    • For the Teams desktop app: Clear the Teams client cache and then restart the application. You can follow this instruction: Clear the Teams client cache - Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Learn
    • For Teams on the web: Try clearing your browser cache, then sign in again. You can also test using InPrivate / Incognito mode or a different web browser
    • For Teams on mobile: Uninstall the Teams app completely, then reinstall it from the app store and sign in again.

    2. Update or reinstall Teams

Make sure you’re on the latest version of Teams. If the issue continues, a clean reinstall can help rule out any client-side corruption.

    3. Recreate the affected tab

Removing and re-adding the SharePoint document library tab can sometimes reset how the content is rendered within Teams: Add a SharePoint page, list, or document library as a tab in Teams - Microsoft Support

If the issue persists after trying the above, the next step would be to collect Teams logs from an affected user and raise a support request with Microsoft. Providing logs will allow support engineers to review what’s happening at the client level (for example, tab rendering, authentication, or caching behavior), which isn’t visible from the interface and is often necessary to identify the root cause.

    For business support:

Thanks again for sharing the details, it’s helpful for narrowing this down.

The behavior matches known limitations and tab-loading issues in the Teams client rather than a SharePoint problem.

    Key points from the symptoms:

    • The same SharePoint library works correctly when opened directly in a browser.
    • The problem is intermittent and affects multiple users and channels.
    • Content sometimes appears “cached” or from another tab.

This aligns with how Teams renders SharePoint content as a tab (an embedded website/app) inside the Teams client. Issues can arise from:

    • How the Teams desktop client hosts and caches web content.
    • Conditional Access or other policies that affect embedded websites and app tabs.

From the available information, the following guidance applies:

    1. Nature of the issue
    • Document library tabs in Teams are effectively SharePoint sites embedded as a tab using the built-in SharePoint Files tab app (com.microsoft.teamspace.tab.files.sharepoint).
    • When tabs or embedded websites fail or show inconsistent content, it is typically a Teams client/tab-hosting issue, not a SharePoint library issue, especially if the same library works fine in a browser.
    1. Known tab and Conditional Access behavior
    • Tabs that embed websites or apps can fail or behave inconsistently in the Teams desktop client when Conditional Access or similar policies are in place. In these cases, the same content usually works in a browser or the Teams web client.
    • Some tabs still depend on web authentication that does not behave the same way in the desktop client when Conditional Access is enabled.
    1. Recommended workarounds
    • Use Teams in a browser (Edge/Chrome) instead of the desktop client when accessing SharePoint document library tabs, especially if Conditional Access or other web-based policies are in use.
    • Alternatively, open the library directly in SharePoint in a browser when the tab view in Teams is not reliable.
    1. Version/caching considerations
    • The described behavior (showing outdated or wrong-tab content) is consistent with client-side tab rendering/caching issues in the Teams desktop app.
    • Using the browser-based Teams client or opening the library directly in SharePoint is an appropriate workaround while the desktop client behavior is unreliable.

In summary, this is most likely a Teams desktop tab-hosting/caching issue, potentially influenced by Conditional Access or similar policies, not a problem with the SharePoint library itself. Using Teams in a browser or opening the library directly in SharePoint is the recommended workaround.
