Live currency quotes in Excel are provided through linked data types, specifically the Currencies data type, which works in Excel for Microsoft 365 (including Mac and Excel for the web) for eligible Microsoft 365 accounts.

To get live currency quotes in Excel for the web or Excel for Mac (Microsoft 365):

    1. In a worksheet, enter a currency pair using ISO codes in a cell, in the format: FromCurrency/ToCurrency Examples:
      • USD/EUR (US Dollar to Euro)
      • GBP/USD (British Pound to US Dollar)
    2. Select the cell (or multiple cells with different pairs).
    3. On the ribbon, go to Data and choose the Currencies data type.
      • Excel converts the text to a linked Currencies data type.
      • A Currencies icon appears in the cell when the pair is recognized.
      • If a generic icon appears instead, use the Data Selector to search for and confirm the correct currency pair.
    4. To show the live quote and other fields:
      • Select the converted cell(s).
      • Click the Insert Data button (or press Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+F5).
      • From the list of available fields, choose Price to insert the current exchange rate into a new column.
      • Other fields such as Last Trade Time can also be inserted.
    5. Use the extracted values in formulas and calculations as normal.
    6. To refresh the live data:
      • Go to Data > Refresh All to update the quotes.

    Notes and requirements:

    • Currencies data type and other linked data types (like Stocks) are available to Microsoft 365 accounts (Worldwide Multi-Tenant clients).
    • Currency information is provided as-is and may be delayed; it is not intended for trading or financial advice.
    • For other financial data types (such as stocks), use the Stocks linked data type in a similar way from the Data tab.
