Office2024 for Mac is suddenly in Read-only mode only hours after creating Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents earlier in the day.

I ran Auto-update and now all applications are up to date and ret=strated the Mac and re-signed in here - still nothing working and the 2024 License purchase history has disappeared.

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

If the Office apps are in read-only mode, it means that your license is not being recognized by the system. In this situation, first check your Microsoft account's Services & Subscriptions page to see if the product key is linked to your Microsoft account.

    https://account.microsoft.com/services

If you see your license there, you can use the Office License Removal Tool to remove all previous traces of the Office license and then reactivate it using your Microsoft account. See,

The apps are running in read-only mode because the license is no longer being recognized on the Mac. Use these steps to repair activation and licensing:

    1. Confirm that the Office license still exists for the account
      • Go to the Services & subscriptions page and sign in with the same Microsoft account that was used to buy/activate Office.
      • Verify that the Office 2024/Microsoft 365 license is listed there. If it is missing, the apps will only work in read-only mode.
    2. Remove any corrupted or conflicting licenses from the Mac
      • Download and run the Office license removal tool for Mac:
      • Open the .pkg from Downloads and follow the wizard.
      • When prompted, select Install to complete license removal, then Close when finished.
    3. Reactivate Office on the Mac
      • Open any Office app (Word, Excel, or PowerPoint).
      • When prompted, sign in with the same email account that shows the valid license on the Services & subscriptions page.
      • If the account has both a Microsoft 365 for Mac license and a one-time purchase, choose the Microsoft 365 for Mac license if available.
      • After successful activation, restart the Mac.
    4. If activation still fails or apps remain read-only
      • Uninstall the Office apps from Applications, then reinstall them from the Services & subscriptions page for the same Microsoft account.
      • After reinstall, open an app and sign in again to activate.

If the Services & subscriptions page does not show any valid Office license for the account, the purchase may not be associated with this account or the license may not be valid; in that case, activation on this Mac will not work until a valid license is available.
