I purchased an HP Pavillion laptop on Amazon and the order included, "Lifetime Office 365" but when I try to sign up, Microsoft wants me to pay for a subscription after 6 months. Please advise

Sorry, there's no such thing as "lifetime Microsoft 365" so you may have been fooled. Microsoft 365 is only available by subscription.

As other contributors have said, any subscription requires that you pay regularly, monthly or yearly. Sometimes, you get a one-year prepaid subscription when you purchase a computer, but usually it is just a trial version (maybe one month).

Check with the seller what is on offer from them, specifically.

    Hi @Douglas Pratt,

Based on the official licensing model I found, Microsoft 365 or Office 365 is a subscription service, not a lifetime license. If it is asking for payment after 6 months, that usually means the laptop included a trial or limited prepaid term, not a perpetual entitlement.

To help you check, please review the Amazon order details, seller message, or receipt to see whether a 25-character product key was provided. If a key was included, it normally needs to be redeemed first so the license is linked to the Microsoft account being used. Retailer purchases may provide the key by email or receipt, and redeeming it is what adds the license to the account.

If the Amazon listing specifically advertised Lifetime Office 365, that wording does not match the standard Microsoft 365 licensing model. In that case, the matter would need to be raised with the Amazon seller, because subscriptions purchased through third-party retailers such as Amazon must be handled with that retailer for billing, cancellation, or refund matters.

I hope it clears your concerns. Should you have any further questions, please feel free to reach out.

"Lifetime Office 365" is not an offering in the Microsoft 365 product line. Anything branded "Microsoft 365" or "Office 365" is a subscription, not a perpetual (lifetime) license.

Relevant points from the provided information:

    • Microsoft 365 is a subscription service. It requires recurring billing and will prompt for payment when the included trial or initial term (for example, 6 or 12 months) ends.
    • Perpetual, one-time-purchase Office is sold under names like Office 2024 (or Office 2021, etc.), not Microsoft 365. A one-time purchase gives rights to install Office apps on a single device and does not include ongoing feature upgrades.
    • If a device seller advertises "lifetime Office 365," that is a seller/retailer claim, not a Microsoft subscription type. Microsoft systems will still treat any Microsoft 365 entitlement as time-limited and will ask for payment when the subscription term ends.

Given that Microsoft 365 subscriptions are time-limited by design, the options supported by the referenced content are:

    1. Continue with Microsoft 365 as a subscription
      • Purchase or renew a Microsoft 365 subscription (for example, Microsoft 365 Family or Personal) when the current term ends.
      • This keeps the desktop apps fully functional beyond the 6-month period.
    2. Use Microsoft 365 Online for free instead of a paid subscription
      • Use the free web-based apps in a browser via Microsoft 365 Online. This does not provide a full desktop subscription but allows working with documents online without ongoing subscription fees.
    3. Switch to a non-subscription, one-time purchase of Office
      • Turn off recurring billing on any existing Microsoft 365 subscription.
      • After the subscription expires, purchase a one-time Office product (for example, Office 2024) and then switch the license in the Office apps to use that perpetual product.

If the Amazon listing explicitly promised "lifetime Office 365," that discrepancy must be resolved with the seller or retailer, because Microsoft’s subscription platform will not recognize or honor a "lifetime" Microsoft 365 entitlement.
