Microsoft account won't allow DOB update

Hello there,

My PC won't allow me to download printer software and is why I am here. I keep getting this error message stating that I'd needed permission from "an adult". I am 81 years old. In the Info section, it has the year of my birth in 2021. However, in the Family Safety window it says my age is 5 years old. I presume the system is reading "5 years old" from 2021 when I opened my Microsoft account in 2021, but that is not my age. I researched to see who the adult I needed permissions from was and it is apparently myself. I keep getting the runaround when trying to correct it myself in a constant loop between the Family Safety screen to my Profile in Microsoft where it's greyed out and won' t allow me to update the DOB. I am hoping someone can assist me.

When you go to https://account.live.com, did you get a pop up with two options?

You want to choose "I am a parent or guardian", then sign into a different Microsoft account whose date of birth indicating an adult user. If you don't have one you can use, you can create a new one just for this purpose for now.

It will prompt you to sign in, and give your account consent, and join your family group.

Once joining the new account's family group, go to https://account.live.com/mykids.aspx sign in with the new account (adult one), you should see your "child" account listed. Click on "Edit this child's personal info" And it will let you update the date of birth for this child user.

Once updated, you can then use the "Remove consent for this child's account", then go back to the family safety page, click on this child account and choose "remove from family group".

The account is being treated as a child account because the date of birth on the Microsoft account indicates an underage user, so Family Safety restrictions and “ask an adult” prompts are being applied and the date of birth field is locked.

To correct this, use the official age/consent tools and then update the profile:

    1. Confirm that the account is marked as an adult account
      • Go to the parental consent guidance and start the interactive tool: Managing parental consent – Start.
      • Follow the prompts so the system can recognize the account as above statutory age. This is required because the current birthdate on the account indicates a child.
    2. Update the date of birth on the Microsoft account (once recognized as adult)
      • Sign in to the profile page using the same Microsoft account: Sign in.
      • Edit the profile and change the date of birth to the correct one, then select Save.
    3. Clear or reset Family Safety restrictions on the device
      • If Family Safety settings are still enforced even after the account is corrected, run the Family Safety refresh task on the affected PC:
        1. Press Windows key + R.
        2. Type cmd and select OK.
        3. In the Command Prompt, enter:
                  schtasks /run /tn "Microsoft\Windows\Shell\FamilySafetyRefreshTask"

        4. Restart the computer.
      • Repeat these steps on any other device where restrictions still appear.
    4. If the account is in a Family group where it is incorrectly listed as a child
      • Sign in at https://account.microsoft.com/family and check whether the account appears as a child under another organizer.
      • If so, the organizer can adjust or remove Family Safety settings or remove the account from the family group following the steps in the Family Safety troubleshooting article.

If the date of birth remains greyed out even after using the consent tool and profile edit page, the account is still classified as a child account and must reach the legal adult age defined for the region before the birthdate can be changed directly; in that case, Family Safety settings must be managed by the organizer account instead.
