Creating restricted channels within a team for confidential discussions or projects
Based on the scenario and tags, the channel is likely a private channel and your account change means you’re no longer a valid member under the new institution account.
Key points about private channels:
- Only users who are members of the parent team and explicitly added to the private channel can access it.
- A lock icon indicates a private channel.
- Membership is managed separately from the parent team.
Because you moved from one institution to another, the account that originally owned/created or was a member of that private channel is effectively different from your current account. Even if you can still see the channel listed, you won’t be able to open it unless you are added as a member with the new account.
Action steps:
- Confirm whether the channel has a lock icon next to its name (indicating a private channel).
- Contact a current owner of that team/private channel (or your Teams/IT admin) and ask them to:
- Open the team in Microsoft Teams.
- Go to More options > Manage team > Channels.
- Select the private channel and add your new institution account as a member/owner.
- If your previous account was disabled and later re-enabled, be aware that:
- Membership to private channels is not automatically restored.
- You must request to be re-added to each private channel individually.
Once your new account is explicitly added to the private channel, access should be restored.
