I am able to see a channel I created in Teams but I am not able to access it. I am however, able to access other channels under that same Team. I just transferred by accounts from one institution to another. Please advise.

    Hi @McMahon-Grenz, Julie F

I hope you are doing well.

Thank you for reaching out and for sharing your experience regarding Teams private channel. Based on your description, you cannot access the private channel that you created, this indicates that there was a new owner added to the channel and your account has been changed into a member and removed.

To resolve the issue, please reach out to your organization's IT admin and share these steps with them:

    1. Sign in to Microsoft Teams admin center
    2. Navigate to Teams > Manage teams.
    3. Select the team including the private channel that you created.
    4. Select the Channels tab > the private channel.

    1. Add you to the channel as a member.

    1. Promote your role to owner.

Once finish, please wait for some times and try again to see if you can access the channel.

If the private channel was created in the old institution’s tenant, your new institution account won’t automatically have access. In that situation, your options are:

    • Sign in with the old institution account (if it still exists), or
    • Have the old tenant IT admin add your account as a guest/member of the Team, then add it to the private channel

Please note that this cannot be performed by users or forum moderators, as we do not have administrative access to user accounts or the ability to manage authentication, passwords, or access rights.

What if I am the only owner of the private channel?

Based on the scenario and tags, the channel is likely a private channel and your account change means you’re no longer a valid member under the new institution account.

    Key points about private channels:

    • Only users who are members of the parent team and explicitly added to the private channel can access it.
    • A lock icon indicates a private channel.
    • Membership is managed separately from the parent team.

Because you moved from one institution to another, the account that originally owned/created or was a member of that private channel is effectively different from your current account. Even if you can still see the channel listed, you won’t be able to open it unless you are added as a member with the new account.

    Action steps:

    1. Confirm whether the channel has a lock icon next to its name (indicating a private channel).
    2. Contact a current owner of that team/private channel (or your Teams/IT admin) and ask them to:
      • Open the team in Microsoft Teams.
      • Go to More options > Manage team > Channels.
      • Select the private channel and add your new institution account as a member/owner.
    3. If your previous account was disabled and later re-enabled, be aware that:
      • Membership to private channels is not automatically restored.
      • You must request to be re-added to each private channel individually.

Once your new account is explicitly added to the private channel, access should be restored.
