trying to turn on the f5 thru f7 keys for volume?

every time i press f5 thru f7 to adjust volume on my hp touch desktop. it just switches to the search bar and other tabs. there is no fn lock or anything on here. i have repeated hit fn and esc to no avail. and when I restart the pc and hit f10 for the setting the bios settings are locked so I can't even adjust. please help. I am using the wireless keyboard and mouse as well that came with the pc. thank you in advance. and this is after i turned off the carot browsing

Ya I have to hold the fn button or do it from the settings option and turn it up snd down from there. Kinda sounds like im screwed lol not gonna lie

Then it is not BIOS issue, no need to install it.

When you got to BIOS, you said it was locked. Did you find this Action Keys Mode option, but it wouldn't let you make changes, or?

I fear that HP doesn't provide a solution for this for desktop/AIO devices.

They have the instruction but all for notebook users: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_5878386-5878448-16

And there is not a single document from them laying out the instruction for Desktop/AIO devices.

I fear they simply don't provide this feature for these models. Unfortunately it is not a Windows feature, so it cannot be fixed from Windows. You might want to reach out to HP support for clarification. Or, get a different keyboard, like Logitech's keyboard. They come with local function key controls.

On many modern keyboards, the top-row keys (including F5–F7) have two modes:

Special-key mode (volume, brightness, etc.)
Standard function-key mode (F1–F12 for app shortcuts like Search)

The issue described indicates the keyboard is currently in standard function-key mode, so F5–F7 are being sent as normal function keys instead of volume keys.

Use these steps depending on the keyboard type:

If the keyboard has an Fn key that toggles function mode:
- Press the Fn key once to switch modes. On some Microsoft/Surface keyboards, a light on the Fn key indicates function mode is locked; turning that off returns the top row to special-key behavior (volume, etc.).
- Then press F5–F7 again to see if they now control volume.
If the keyboard has an F Lock key:
- Press F Lock to toggle between standard F1–F12 functions and the alternate commands (such as volume, media, etc.).
- When F Lock is off, alternate functions work; when on, standard F1–F12 functions work.
If using a Surface Keyboard or similar Microsoft keyboard:
- The top row acts as special keys (volume, brightness, etc.) unless the Fn key is enabled (locked).
- Press Fn to lock/unlock function mode. When the Fn light is on, the keys act as F1–F12; when off, they act as special keys like volume.

If none of these keys (Fn/F Lock) exist or respond, test with another USB or wireless keyboard. If the second keyboard’s volume keys work correctly, the original keyboard may require vendor-specific software or may have a hardware/firmware limitation that needs to be adjusted using HP’s tools rather than Windows settings.

If that's the case, I did locate the model HP All-in-One 24-cr0013w PC, but HP doesn't have specific instructions on how to turn off the Fn key lock for this specific model. It sounds like you already tried the typical ones. There's another combo out there for some HP models, which is Fn + Shift; see if that turns off the Fn key lock.

Now, if pressing the Fn+Volume key doesn't work either, then this can be a BIOS issue or a potential keyboard issue. Can you hold down the Win+R keys, type in msinfo32.exe, and press enter? When it is launched, tell me what the product SKU is.

Next, I need to know, does this only affect the volume keys? What about brightness adjustment keys? Do they work?

No one can give you a simple answer without necessary info.

SKU can determine the exact model to determine how to turn off FN lock since not all HP models use the same instructions.

Knowing whether the brightness keys work or not is to determine if it is indeed related to Fn key. If they work then we need to troubleshoot on something else.

But if you don’t want to provide this info then I won’t be able to help you reasonably other than playing the guessing game.
