I have files that won't open that were saved on Word. I just want to reopen them.

Yes. Word for Mac includes a built‑in “Recover Text from Any File” (Text Recovery) converter that can help reopen problem documents.

To use it in Word for Mac:

    1. In Word, go to Word > Preferences.
    2. Under Authoring and Proofing Tools, select General.
    3. Turn on Confirm file format conversion at Open, then close the dialog.
    4. Choose File > Open.
    5. In the Open dialog, use the Open dropdown (or Open menu at the bottom right) and select Recover Text / Recover Text from Any File.
    6. Select the document that will not open and choose Open.
    7. After the text is recovered, save it as a new Word document (for example, as .docx).

    Notes:

    • Formatting, images, and non‑text elements are usually lost; the tool focuses on recovering plain text.
    • This method is specifically recommended for damaged or blocked Word files on Mac.

If the document still will not open, also try:

    • Uploading it to OneDrive and opening it in Word for the web to convert it.
    • Checking for older versions in Time Machine or other backups.
