When I try opening a saved document Microsoft won't allow it to open and states "can't find license for application. When I open on a different computer, it will open.

    1

    Open Word.

At the top right of Word, log out of Office.

Restart (not shut down) your PC, then log back into Office, is your subscription/licence then recognised correctly.

    2

If not, log into your Microsoft account on this link, is your Office licence listed correctly there, or if that is a subscription, check the expiry date listed on your subscription, is that listed correctly.

If not, go to the Payments and Billing section, is it indicated your payment has been processed correctly.

The message indicates an activation or licensing problem on the computer where the document will not open. The file itself is fine, as shown by it opening on another device.

Follow these steps on the affected computer:

    1. Check that Office is activated and using the correct account
      • Open any Office app (for example, Word or Excel).
      • If it shows Unlicensed Product or an activation error in the title bar, sign in with the same account that was used to buy or redeem Office.
      • If prompted and the wrong account is used, the message We couldn't find any Office products may appear. In that case, sign out and sign in with the correct account.
      • For more detailed activation guidance, see the article on Unlicensed Product and activation errors in Office.
    2. If the app says it cannot verify the license
      • This can happen if the app is running in compatibility mode or if a required licensing registry key is missing.
      • Stop running the Office app in compatibility mode:
        1. Close the Office app.
        2. Browse to the app’s executable (for example, Outlook.exe or WinWord.exe) in:
          • MSI-based: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office1x or C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office1x
          • Click-to-Run: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office1x or C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office1x (where 1x is the Office version, such as 16 for Office 2016.)
        3. Right-click the app, select Properties.
        4. On the Compatibility tab, clear Run this program in compatibility mode for.
        5. Select Change settings for all users and again clear Run this program in compatibility mode for.
        6. Select OK twice and then reopen the app.
      • If the Compatibility tab is not available, use Troubleshoot compatibility on the executable and complete the wizard with no options selected.
    3. If activation still fails
      • Ensure the device has a working internet connection.
      • Restart the computer.
      • Install Office updates and, if needed, perform an Online Repair of Office (from Apps & Features → Office → Modify → Online Repair) as suggested in the read-only/activation troubleshooting guidance.

Once Office is properly activated and not running in compatibility mode, the document should open normally on that computer.
