How do I gain my ownership of my one note account back? I’m the owner but I can’t edit it.

Hi, my one note account doesn’t seem to be working correctly. I’m the owner of my own one not account and yet it’s not letting me edit or draw anything. It says that I am not the owner of this account and should ask the owner for permission to edit. I’m worried since all my important notes are on this and I wouldn’t want to lose it Ofcourse. I did share it with a friend but she can only view it, and she hasn’t edited it or viewed it anyway so I don’t think it’s that. But please do reach out to me, thanks.

    Hello Sarah Taimoor!

From your description, your OneNote notebook is unexpectedly showing as read‑only on your iOS device and prompting you to ask the owner for permission, even though you are the owner.

Before changing anything, I suggest first checking whether your notes are still available from the web version. Please go to OneNote on the web, sign in with the same Microsoft account, and open the affected notebook there.

You can also try opening the same notebook on another device (such as a Windows PC or Mac). If you’re able to edit it there, that would suggest the issue is limited to the iOS app rather than your account or the notebook itself. If the notebook opens and your latest notes are visible, it would be a good idea to copy important pages to a new notebook or create a backup first.

After that, try updating the OneNote app, then fully close and reopen it. Also confirm that you are signed in with the same account that owns the notebook, as OneNote may sometimes open a notebook under another cached account/session.

You can also pull down on the notebook list to force a manual sync/refresh.

If your notebook is stored on OneDrive, it’s worth checking that your storage isn’t full, as sync or storage issues can occasionally cause notebooks to open in read-only mode.

Additionally, you might find this articleuseful, particularly the “Notebooks not syncing” section.

Hope this helps sort things out. Feel free to update me on the result!

The notebook is read-only because of its permissions, not because ownership was lost. To regain the ability to edit, adjust the sharing/permissions on the notebook where it is stored.

If the notebook is on OneDrive and shared:

    1. Open OneDrive and locate the OneNote notebook file.
    2. Right-click the notebook and select Share.
    3. In the sharing window, select Manage Access.
    4. Under People and Links, check the permissions:
      • For any entry that should be able to edit, set it to Can Edit.
      • If the current access is Can View, change it to Can Edit for the account that is being used in OneNote.
    5. If there is an entry that should no longer have access, choose Remove User.

If the notebook is a Class/Staff Notebook (for example, used with education accounts):

    • The Content Library is intentionally read-only for students; only the owner can edit it.
    • If people have lost access to the Content Library in a Class or Staff Notebook that is owned, go to the Fix notebooks page on OneNote.com and select Fix Permissions next to the affected notebook. Wait until Permissions Fixed appears, then try again.

If the notebook is a Class Notebook in Teams and students (or another account) cannot edit:

    1. Sign in to Microsoft365.com.
    2. Open Class Notebook from the app launcher.
    3. Select Manage notebooks and choose the notebook.
    4. For Collaboration Space:
      • Select Collaboration Space permissionsEdit.
      • Ensure the relevant users are checked and that Give read-only access to all students in the class is unchecked.
      • Save the changes.
    5. Ensure Lock Collaboration Space is set to Unlocked.

If access is blocked with a 403/Forbidden-type message (for example, error 0xE0190193):

    • This indicates that permissions on the shared notebook or section were changed. Contact the current owner or the service admin for that storage location and ask them to restore view and edit permissions for the account.

If none of the above applies and the notebook is still read-only on the device, verify that the notebook is not opened from an email attachment (attachments are read-only) and that the page does not contain unsupported content types for the app being used.
