I'm having an issue with posting images - or rather previously posted images that were viewable are no longer viewable - forces end user to download the image to view it. How do i fix this?

    Hi @Chmil, Shelley L

Thank you for sharing your concerns.

To ensure I fully understand your situation and provide the most effective assistance, I’ll need a few additional details, such as:

Could you please confirm whether this behavior affects other users in your organization, or if it is only occurring with your account?

Have you tried accessing the system from another device or using an incognito/InPrivate window, and does the issue still persist?

Also, does this issue occur consistently with posts from a specific timeframe, or does it happen randomly?

Please understand that our initial reply may not always immediately resolve the issue. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

Images that were previously visible in Viva Engage posts but now appear blank or only downloadable are typically affected by changes in the underlying SharePoint storage used by the community.

For community posts, files and images are stored in the SharePoint document library that backs the Viva Engage community, under the path:

Documents > Apps > Viva Engage

If this folder structure is moved, renamed, or duplicated, images in conversation threads can stop rendering inline and instead show as missing/blank, forcing users to download them.

    To fix this:

    1. Open the SharePoint document library that backs the affected Viva Engage community.
    2. Check the folder structure under Documents > Apps and look for multiple or renamed Viva Engage (or Yammer) folders.
    3. Move the contents of any duplicated or incorrect folders into the official Apps/Viva Engage folder.
    4. Once the duplicates are empty, delete the duplicated folders.
    5. Ensure the permissions on the official Apps/Viva Engage folder are the default ones.

After restoring the correct folder structure and permissions, images attached to posts should resume displaying inline in Viva Engage instead of requiring download.

If the problem is seen specifically when viewing Viva Engage conversations via a SharePoint web part on Mac/iOS Safari or the SharePoint iOS app, it can also be due to known limitations:

    • On Safari (Mac/iOS), disable Prevent Cross-Site Tracking in Safari Settings to allow images to show in the SharePoint Viva Engage Conversations web part.
    • In the SharePoint iOS app, tapping the error will open the image in Viva Engage or the browser.
    • Ensure the SharePoint site is using the original domain (e.g., contoso.onmicrosoft.com), as conversation web parts are not supported on vanity domains.
