No. The on-premises data gateway (personal mode) does not support azure Databricks connections.

Personal mode is limited to PBI only and supports only Import mode with scheduled or on-demand refresh. It does not support DirectQuery, live connections, or advanced connectivity scenarios typically required for Azure Databricks. ([Microsoft Learn](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/a/12773824?utm_source=chatgpt.com"Does the On-premises data gateway(personal mode) support azure databricks connection - Microsoft Q&A"))

If you need to connect to Databricks, use either:

  • On-prem data gateway (standard mode), or
  • Virtual network (VNet) data gateway (for secured/network-isolated Databricks setups).

Hello zmsoft,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A and thank you for posting your questions here.

I understand that you would like to know if the On-premises data gateway(personal mode) support azure Databricks connection.

On-premises data gateway (personal mode) is not supported for Azure Databricks scenarios that involve DirectQuery, composite models, shared enterprise usage, or private network access. Personal mode is limited to Power BI Import semantic models with scheduled or on-demand refresh and does not support DirectQuery, live connections, or advanced enterprise gateway capabilities. - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/connect-data/service-gateway-personal-mode

Azure Databricks is natively supported in Power BI through the Azure Databricks connector, which supports both Import and DirectQuery modes. - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-query/connectors/databricks-azure

This approach ensures a supported, scalable, and production-ready configuration. For official guidance and more reading, refer to:

Hi @zmsoft

No, the On-premises Data Gateway (personal mode) is not supported for Azure Databricks connectivity.

Microsoft documents that the personal mode gateway is intended primarily for Power BI personal/import refresh scenarios and does not provide the broader enterprise connectivity capabilities supported by the standard (enterprise) on-premises data gateway.

Azure Databricks is generally accessed directly using its native connectors rather than through a personal-mode gateway. Depending on the service being used (for example Power BI Service, Fabric, or other enterprise integrations), the supported approach is typically:

  • Direct Azure Databricks connector usage, or
  • Standard/enterprise on-premises data gateway if a gateway-supported enterprise integration scenario is required

    No.

On-premises data gateway (personal mode) can be used only with Power BI and supports only Import semantic models with scheduled or on-demand refresh. It does not support DirectQuery, live connections, composite models, or virtual network data gateways, which are typically involved in Azure Databricks scenarios.

For Azure Databricks connectivity from Microsoft cloud services, use either:

    • The standard on-premises data gateway, or
    • A virtual network (VNet) data gateway when Databricks or its storage is secured by virtual networks or firewalls.
