Try the following steps in order to restore OneNote sign-in and notebook sync on Windows:

  1. Refresh OneNote authentication
    • In OneNote, click the sync error banner (if present). This forces a session refresh and will prompt for credentials again.
    • Sign in with the same Microsoft 365/education account that owns the notebooks.
  2. Verify account and permissions
    • Confirm the correct account is used (school/work vs personal), especially if the password was recently changed.
    • If the notebook is shared, verify that access has not been revoked and that the account still has permission to open/edit it.
  3. Open the notebook in OneNote for the web
    • In a browser, go to https://www.onenote.com and sign in with the same account.
    • Check if the notebook appears and opens.
    • If it does:
      1. Close the OneNote desktop app.
      2. In the browser, go to https://www.onedrive.com with the same account.
      3. Navigate to the folder where the notebook is stored and click the notebook name to open it in the browser.
      4. From there, use Open in OneNote to re-open it in the desktop app and let it re-establish sync.
  4. Clear stored credentials (Windows)
    • Close OneNote and all browsers.
    • Open Settings → search for Credential Manager → open Credential Manager.
    • Select Windows Credentials.
    • Remove entries whose names start with MicrosoftAccount and MicrosoftOffice.
    • Restart Windows, open OneNote, and sign in again when prompted.
  5. If using OneNote on Mac or iOS as well
    • Make sure the latest OneNote version is installed.
    • Sign out of all accounts in OneNote, then sign back in.
    • Force a sync:
      • macOS: Control-click the notebook name → Sync.
      • iOS: Pull down on the Notebooks list to trigger a re-sync.

If the issue persists after these steps, check for any known current OneNote sync issues for the platform in use and report the problem (including the correlation ID and timestamp) through the OneNote feedback/support channels referenced in the documentation.

If Microsoft OneNote is unable to log in or sync notebooks, these are the most common fixes:

    Check internet connection

Make sure your Wi-Fi/mobile data is stable.

    Verify Microsoft account login

Open another Microsoft service like Outlook or OneDrive and confirm your account works.

    Remove and re-add the account

    In OneNote:

    Go to Settings → Accounts

    Sign out

    Restart OneNote

    Sign in again

    Update OneNote

An outdated version can cause sync/login issues. Update from:

    Microsoft Store (Windows)

    Play Store/App Store (mobile)

    Check system date and time

Incorrect time settings can block Microsoft authentication.

    Clear cached credentials (Windows)

    Open “Credential Manager”

    Remove Microsoft/Office related credentials

    Sign in again

    Check OneDrive storage

If storage is full, notebooks may stop syncing.

    Try web version

Open OneNote in browser to check whether the issue is account-related or app-related.

    Disable VPN or firewall temporarily

Sometimes they interfere with Microsoft login servers.

    Reinstall OneNote

If nothing works, reinstalling often fixes corrupted sync components.

    Hi @Darren Han

Based on your information, error 3399811147 typically occurs when the Office desktop app fails to authenticate, even though web-based sign-in works. This usually points to an issue with the Windows Account Manager (WAM) authentication broker since your account functions correctly in the browser.

Please try these initial troubleshooting steps first:

1/ Repair Windows Account Manager (WAM)

To re-register the authentication broker component, open Windows PowerShell by typing PowerShell in the search bar, then right-click and select Run as administrator. Copy and paste the following command for work or school accounts:

    Add-AppxPackage -Register "$env:windir\SystemApps\Microsoft.AAD.BrokerPlugin_cw5n1h2txyewy\Appxmanifest.xml" -DisableDevelopmentMode –ForceApplicationShutdown

Press Enter and wait for completion. After that, run this second command:

    Add-AppxPackage -Register "$env:windir\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.CloudExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy\Appxmanifest.xml" -DisableDevelopmentMode –ForceApplicationShutdown

User's image Once both commands have finished, close PowerShell.

    2/ Disconnect and your account

Go to Settings > Accounts > Access work or school. Locate your work or school account, click on it, and select Disconnect. Confirm the removal when prompted.

    3/ Clear Windows Credential Manager

Open Credential Manager by searching for it in Windows. Select Windows Credentials, then look for and remove any entries related to MicrosoftOffice16_Data, Outlook, Office365, or your email address. User's image

After completing these steps, restart your computer and try signing in to OneNote again.
