Remove Watermark

I have a watermark in a WORD document that I can't remove. The remove water mark function is not having any effect. I can put a second and different water mark over the top of it and both show on the document. I can readily remove the second one but the first remains unchanged. Any ideas what the problem is?

    Dear @Adrian Miller,

From what you described, I understand that you have a watermark in your Word document that cannot be removed using the Remove Watermark option. You’re able to add a new watermark and remove that one, but the original watermark remains unchanged.

I would like to clarify that the Remove Watermark button only removes watermarks created via Design > Watermark. If the watermark was added as a picture/text box in the header, came from a PDF conversion, or exists in another section’s header, Word won’t remove it using the watermark command.

To better understand the situation, could you please confirm following information:

    • Where did the document come from? Was it created in Word originally, or converted from a PDF/scanned file?
    • Does the watermark appear on every page or only certain pages (e.g., page 1 only/odd pages only)?
    • When you double‑click the top margin to open the header, can you select the watermark at all (does it highlight or show handles)?
    • Does your document have multiple sections (e.g., Layout > Breaks shows “Section Break”)? If yes, which section(s) show the watermark?
    • Is the document restricted/protected (Review > Restrict Editing), or stored in a shared location with limited editing permissions?

While you gather the answers above, please try this:

Step 1: Delete it from the Header

    • Double-click the very top of the page to the Header
    • Try to click the watermark
    • Press Delete.

Step 2: If you can’t click it, use Selection Pane

    • Go to Home > Select > Selection Pane
    • Click items like Picture/Text Box/WordArt until the watermark highlights
    • Press Delete

Step 3: Check other header types + sections

    • While in the Header:
    • Check Different First Page and Different Odd & Even Pages (Header & Footer tab)
    • Use Next Section / Previous Section and remove it there too if needed

If the watermark is part of the document background (for example from a PDF), it may be embedded and not removable using standard tools. In that case, the document may need to be recreated.

Please understand that the initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

Your detailed response will help us diagnose and investigate the issue more efficiently. If I misunderstood what you’re looking for, feel free to let me know or share a screenshot. I’d be happy to help further!

Thank you for your cooperation. I'm looking forward for your reply.

The most likely cause is that the “stuck” watermark is stored in a different header (for another section or header type) than the one affected by Design > Watermark > Remove Watermark. Word treats watermarks as header content, and each section can have up to three different headers (primary, first page, and even pages), which may not be linked to each other.

To remove the persistent watermark, delete it from every header that contains it:

    1. Go to a page where the unwanted watermark appears.
    2. Double-click near the top of the page to open the header area.
    3. Move the pointer over the watermark until a 4‑way arrow appears, then click to select it.
    4. Press Delete.
    5. Scroll through the document and repeat for any other pages/sections where the watermark still appears. If the document uses different first-page or even-page headers, open each of those header types and delete the watermark there as well.

If Remove Watermark did nothing, it is because it only removed the watermark from the header(s) in the current section that are linked, leaving unlinked headers (with their own watermark copy) unchanged.
