I received an invite to a family subscription after the account owner renewed his subscription. When I click "join", I get the following error.

"Sorry, something went wrong.

We're not sure what happened but refreshing the page may help, or try again in a little while.

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

You will need to accept the invitation link within 48 hours from the time it is sent to you, otherwise, the link will expire.

If you are not already part of the family group and you received an invitation link but are having trouble joining the group, try opening the invitation link in a different web browser or in an incognito/private browsing window, and then accept the invitation there.

For example, if the invitation was sent to you via email, open Outlook in another browser or in a private browsing tab, sign in, and try joining the family subscription again.

If you are still experiencing issues, ask the family organizer to resend the invitation link via SMS or through a social media app.

The error occurs while trying to join the shared Microsoft 365 Family subscription and usually indicates a problem completing the family-group join, not the renewal itself.

Use these steps to resolve it:

    1. Confirm the invitation and account
      • Open the invitation email again and select Accept.
      • When the browser opens, make sure the signed-in Microsoft account is the one that should receive the shared subscription. If not, sign out and sign back in with the correct account, then select Join now again.
    2. Check for existing family group membership
      • Sharing is only possible if the invitee joins the subscription owner’s Microsoft family group.
      • If already in another Microsoft family group, leaving that group is required before joining this one. See How to leave a Microsoft family group from the article linked in the invite flow, then retry the Join now step from the invitation.
    3. Verify the owner’s sharing status
      • The subscription owner should go to the Microsoft 365 Subscriptions sharing page and check under Share subscription that:
        • The subscription is Microsoft 365 Family or Microsoft 365 Premium and is active.
        • There is at least one share available.
        • The invitation to this account shows as Pending invite and not already accepted or removed.
      • If needed, the owner can select Resend invite or remove and re-add the share, then send a new email invite or Create link and share that link.
    4. Accept within the allowed time
      • Invitations must be accepted within 48 hours. If the invite is older, the owner should send a new invitation and the invitee should repeat the Accept → Join now steps.

If the above steps are followed (correct account, not in another family group, active Family/Premium subscription, valid invite) and the “Sorry, something went wrong” error still appears, the subscription owner should contact Microsoft support from the account portal, as the issue may be on the service side.
