On the new laptop, the Microsoft 365 Personal subscription does not automatically replace an existing Office 2024 (one-time purchase) installation. Office 2024 and Microsoft 365 are different products and can coexist; the apps will keep using whichever license is currently applied.
Use these steps to move to Microsoft 365 Personal on the new laptop:
- If the new laptop currently has a one-time purchase Office (such as Office 2024) installed and it is still using that license, uninstall it if the goal is to use only Microsoft 365:
- On Windows, use the Office uninstall troubleshooter to remove the existing Office installation, then restart the PC.
- Follow the guidance in Can’t switch from Microsoft 365 to Office (the same tool is used to remove existing Office versions).
- Install Microsoft 365 Personal on the new laptop:
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that has the Microsoft 365 Personal subscription.
- Follow the steps in Download and install or reinstall Microsoft 365 or Office 2024 on a PC or Mac to install the Microsoft 365 apps.
- After installation, the apps will automatically use the Microsoft 365 Personal subscription license. Updates and new features will come through the normal Office update mechanism.
If the old unit had a one-time purchase Office 2024 license, that license does not “upgrade” to Microsoft 365; instead, Microsoft 365 is a separate subscription that must be installed and activated as above.
