Dear @Karen Grove,

I hope you’re having a good day.

Thank you for your question, I understand that you would like to connect your Teams account so you can stay informed about your son’s school activities and progress. This is a very reasonable and common need, as many parents want better visibility into their child’s learning.

That said, it’s important to clarify how Microsoft Teams for Education works. In many cases, parents expect that accounts can be “connected” or linked together, but Teams is designed a bit differently.

There isn’t a direct way to connect a personal Teams account to a student’s school account. School accounts are managed within the school’s Microsoft 365 environment, and access to classes, files, and information is controlled by the school.

In practical terms, this means if you would like to view your child’s assignments or class activity, the most common approach is to access the information through your child’s school account.

If you need to join a class meeting or receive updates, this will usually require an invitation from the teacher or school.

Any additional access, such as being included in communications or certain Teams spaces, depends on the school’s policies and how they manage parent involvement.

Because this is managed at the school level, the best next step would be to reach out to your child’s teacher, or the school’s IT/administration team

They can let you know what options are available for parents and, if supported, guide you on how to access relevant information.

I hope this helps clarify how it works and points you in the right direction. If you have any follow-up questions or need help understanding the options they provide, please feel free to reach out.

Thank you, and I hope everything goes well with your child’s school experience.

Warm regards,

To connect with a student’s school and educators in Microsoft Teams, use the options that the school has set up for parents/guardians rather than trying to “join” the student’s school tenant directly with a personal Teams account.

    1. Ensure the student is set up correctly
      • The school or IT admin must create the student’s Microsoft 365 Education account.
      • The student signs in at https://office.com with the school account and selects Teams to see class teams and assignments.
      • Students will receive an email notification when they are added to a class team.
    2. Use Teams to communicate with educators
      • Educators and students communicate through Microsoft Teams for Education using the student’s school account.
      • Teams is the classroom hub for meetings, assignments, and messages. Students can access it in a browser or by downloading and using Microsoft Teams.
    3. Use school-provided parent/guardian communication features
      • Schools can enable Parent Connection in class teams. This lets educators see parent/guardian contact details and start a Teams chat with them.
      • Parents/guardians receive invitations to join these chats at the email address provided to the school. Communication then happens via Teams chat and email, without needing to be added to the student’s class team.
      • Schools can also send a weekly guardian email digest with assignment summaries to parents/guardians.
    4. What to do next
      • Contact the school’s office or IT department and ask:
        • How parents/guardians are set up to receive Teams communications (Parent Connection, guardian email digests, or other tools).
        • Which email address is registered for parent/guardian contact.
      • If the school uses Parent Connection, confirm that the correct guardian email is on file so invitations and summaries reach the right inbox.

Parents/guardians typically do not join the school’s Teams environment as full members; instead, they connect through school-managed features like Parent Connection and guardian email digests that link them to the student’s classes and educators.
