Additional assignment-related features and issues within Microsoft Teams for Education
In Teams for Education, averages are calculated by the Grades experience based on the assignments and their configuration. From the described behavior, the most likely causes are:
- The assignments are not being included in the class average due to gradebook configuration.
- The class is using grading categories and some assignments are missing a category.
- The average-grade visibility is configured differently for that teacher’s classes.
Use the following checks and adjustments in one of the affected class teams.
- Confirm that averages are enabled and visible
- Open the affected class team and go to Assignments or Grades.
- Select the Assignment settings gear icon in the top-right.
- Under Grade settings, verify:
- Average grade is toggled on so that averages are calculated and (optionally) visible to students.
- Grading Schemes is set as expected (point-based by default) and matches how the teacher is entering marks.
- Save any changes and re-check the Grades tab.
- Check how the class average is being calculated
In the Grades view:
- For each assignment, Teams shows the Average Grade for the Assignment.
- For each student, Teams shows the average grade across all assignments.
- The class average is calculated across all assignments by default.
- If the gradebook is filtered (for example, by assignment), the displayed average will only reflect the selected assignment, not all assignments.
- If the class is configured to use Grading Categories, only assignments that have a grading category applied are counted toward the average grade.
- In the Grades tab, clear any filters so that all assignments are visible.
- If grading categories are enabled for this teacher’s classes, open a few of the problematic assignments and confirm that each has an appropriate grading category assigned.
- If an assignment has no category while categories are enabled, assign a category and then allow some time for the averages to refresh.
- Compare a working class vs. a problematic class
Since other teachers or other groups work correctly, compare settings:
- Open a class where averages work as expected.
- Open Assignment settings → Grade settings and note:
- Whether Weighted grading categories are enabled.
- Which categories exist and their weights.
- Whether Average grade is toggled on.
- Open one of the problematic classes and ensure the same configuration, or adjust as needed.
- Validate that assignments are fully graded and returned
For the affected teacher’s classes:
- In Grades, confirm that each student’s assignment has a numeric grade entered (not just rubric feedback) and that the assignment status is Returned.
- If any assignments show as Not turned in, Returned for revision, or similar, they may not be included in the average as expected.
- After confirming, wait a short period and then re-check the averages.
- Use Insights detail view to verify what is counted
- In the Grades tab, select any Average Grade value.
- This opens the detail view from Insights, where the class Distribution, Trend, and Grading Categories average can be reviewed.
- Use this to confirm which assignments and categories are contributing to the averages and whether some assignments are excluded due to missing categories or configuration.
If, after confirming grade settings, grading categories, and assignment status, the issue persists across all groups for the same teacher, collect details (class IDs, example assignments, screenshots of Grade settings) and escalate via Microsoft Support, as this may indicate a tenant-level or account-specific issue with Assignments/Grades processing.
