EXCEL OFFICE 365. FILE option missing next to HOME on ribbon

I AM GOING NUTS!

I have for the past hour tried to do everything to get the FILE option showing to the left of HOME on the ribbon in Excel. (ON a MAC)

I have tried ctrl/clicking (right click) on the ribbon. Nothing happens.

I have tried PREFERENCES and cannot find a FILE option for the TABS.

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get that FILE option to show on the left of HOME on the ribbon.

THIS IS MADDENING!

    Dear @Paul Argyropoulos,

Good day, and thank you for clearly explaining your issue. From my research, this is normal behavior on Excel for Mac. Unlike Windows, Excel for Mac (including Microsoft 365) does not have a File tab on the ribbon.

Look at the very top of your screen (the macOS menu bar), you will see:

    Apple logo > Excel > File > Edit > View > etc.

All the options that would normally appear under the File tab in Windows Excel (such as New, Open, Save, Print, Share, etc.) can be accessed from the File menu in this top menu bar.

If you’re looking for Excel settings, you can use the following shortcut:

Press Command + , (Command key + comma) to open Preferences, which is the Mac equivalent of File > Options in Windows

For additional context, on macOS, every application already includes a standard File menu at the very top of the screen (next to the Apple logo). Microsoft follows Apple’s design guidelines for macOS, rather than replicating the Windows interface exactly. Having both a File menu (menu bar) and a File tab (ribbon) could be confusing, so this design approach has been consistently used for many years across Excel, Word, and PowerPoint on Mac.

I hope this helps clarify the difference in the interface. Should you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out, I’m always happy to help. Wishing you a wonderful day ahead!

On Excel for Microsoft 365 on Mac, the File option is not a tab on the ribbon like Home; it is part of the macOS menu bar at the top of the screen.

To access File commands (Open, Save, Print, etc.) on a Mac:

    1. Make sure Excel is the active application.
    2. Look at the very top of the screen (macOS menu bar), not inside the Excel window.
    3. Click File in the menu bar, next to Excel and Edit.

There is no setting in Excel Preferences or ribbon customization on Mac that will add a File tab to the left of Home on the ribbon; the design uses the macOS menu bar instead.

If specific buttons on the ribbon are disabled (for example, Save, Print, or other commands), possible causes include:

    1. The file is rights-managed and the current account does not have permission to modify, copy, or print it. In that case, contact the file owner to request less restricted permissions.
    2. An administrator has disabled certain commands via group policy. In that case, contact the administrator.
