Hello, good day and thanks for your question. I understand that you have encountered an issue pertaining to an old account that has an associated Microsoft product or service on it.

To check and confirm, is this Office 2021, 2024 or Microsoft 365? If it is Office 2021 or 2024, are you trying to install it on a different device?

If it is for Microsoft 365, please take note that you cannot transfer an existing Microsoft 365 subscription from one Microsoft account to another.

If you are unable to cancel and it is still being billed, you can reach out to the support team at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/contactus/ and then click on Microsoft 365 and then click Get Home Support and then type in Billing question and click the blue button that says Sign in to contact Support and login and proceed from there or you can also request a call back by going to https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2168171 in case you are having trouble cancelling and it is best to also cancel the payment method on file to avoid future charges that is related to the subscription.

Follow these steps to stop the old charges and use Microsoft 365/Office with the current account:

    1. Investigate what the monthly charge is for
      • Go to the Microsoft account dashboard for each email address that might be involved and check Services & subscriptions at https://account.microsoft.com/services.
      • If the charge is for a subscription on an old account, it will appear there.
      • If you don’t recognize the charge or account, use the guidance in How to investigate a billing charge from Microsoft to identify which subscription and account it belongs to.
    2. Cancel or turn off recurring billing on the old subscription
      • Sign in with the account that is being charged.
      • Go to Subscriptions and locate the Microsoft 365/Office subscription.
      • If there is an overdue balance, pay it first; cancellation is blocked if money is owing.
      • Turn off recurring billing or cancel the subscription following the steps in Cancel subscription / Turn off recurring billing.
    3. If you can’t cancel
      • If there is no cancel/turn off recurring billing option:
        • Confirm that the subscription was actually purchased directly from Microsoft and not from a third-party (Amazon, Best Buy, Google Play, Apple App Store). If it was from a third party, contact that retailer or store to manage or cancel the subscription and request a refund.
        • Make sure the correct Microsoft account is being used; if the wrong account is signed in, the subscription will not appear.
      • If the payment method on the old account is expired and there is an outstanding balance, update or change the payment method, clear the balance, then cancel.
    4. Request a refund if appropriate
      • After cancelling, use How to get a refund on a Microsoft subscription to see if the old subscription charges are eligible for a refund.
    5. Purchase/activate Office on the new account
      • Sign in with the current account where Office should be used.
      • Purchase a new Microsoft 365/Office subscription on this account, or redeem any unused product key here.
      • This will associate the subscription with the new account going forward.
    6. If still unable to resolve
      • Use the guided support for subscriptions and billing to contact Microsoft Support and have them review the billing and account association.
