Using classic Outlook for Windows in educational settings
In Outlook on the web/Outlook.com, the message list layout (showing sender and subject) is controlled by layout and display settings. To restore the standard view:
- At the top of the page, select Settings (gear icon).
- Select Mail > Layout.
- Under Message organization or related layout options, ensure messages are not grouped or hidden in an unexpected way (for example, turn off any unusual grouping or conversation settings if needed).
- To adjust how much information shows in the list, use Display density:
- Go to the View tab.
- Select Density and choose Roomy, Cozy, or Compact. These control how sender, subject, and preview text appear.
If the reading pane or message list looks wrong, reset the reading pane and conversation view:
- On the View tab, select Layout > Reading pane and choose Show on the right or Show on the bottom, or Hide if preferred.
- On the View tab, under Messages > Conversations, choose Group into conversations or Show each message separately, depending on the preferred default.
If using Outlook Web App (for organizations):
- Select Settings > Display settings.
- Under Message list, choose the option that shows the sender and subject as desired (for example, sender or subject on top, and show the preview line).
- Under Reading pane, choose the position (right, bottom, or hidden) and select OK to save.
These steps restore the typical inbox layout with sender and subject visible in the message list.
