Using classic Outlook for Windows in educational settings
Hi @Ronald Osborne,
I hope you're doing well today.
Based on the information you shared that in Classic Outlook your Inbox no longer shows the standard message list with Sender and Subject.
This typically occurs when the Inbox view or message list format is changed, or when columns are hidden due to a different view being applied. Additionally, switching between conversation and list style layouts can affect which details appear in the message list. I appreciate how disruptive this is when you rely on a consistent layout to review emails quickly.
To restore the default experience, please follow these solutions in order, since each step builds on the previous one.
1/ Reset the current Inbox view to the default
- Open Classic Outlook and select your Inbox folder.
- Select the View tab, and then choose Reset View.
- When prompted, confirm the reset so the folder returns to its default configuration.
This aligns with Microsoft guidance on changing and returning the message list display in Outlook.
2/ Switch to a list view and re add Sender and Subject columns
Sometimes the Inbox is still in a layout that does not show the columns you expect, so the next step is to move to a list style view and then add the missing fields.
- Go to the View tab, select Change View, and choose Single or Preview so Outlook uses a list view that supports columns.
- Select View Settings, then select Columns.
- In Available columns, add From and Subject to the visible columns list, then use the move controls to place them in the preferred order, and select OK to save.

3/ Create and apply a clean view if the layout keeps changing
If the layout continues to revert, creating a fresh view helps replace a corrupted or heavily customized configuration.
- Select the View tab, then open Manage Views.
- Select New, name the view something like Default Mail View, and choose a table style view for mail folders.
- Select Apply View, and if needed, apply the same view across other mail folders to keep everything consistent.

I hope the information I shared earlier was somewhat helpful in addressing your issue. If you have any further questions or updates, please don’t hesitate to share. I’m always happy to assist further if needed.
Thank you for your patience and your understanding. I look forward to continuing the conversation.
