Powerpoint animations not working in Record mode

Issue Summary:

I am experiencing a problem with PowerPoint recording mode where animations do not trigger during recording, even though they work correctly in normal slideshow mode.

  • Animations are set to “On Click”
  • In Slide Show → From Beginning, animations behave as expected
  • In any Record mode (Slide Show → Record, Record from Beginning, etc.), all objects appear immediately and animations do not trigger
  • This occurs even in a simple test file with one slide and a single animation
  • There are no recorded timings (Clear Timings is disabled)
  • Issue persists regardless of using mouse or keyboard input

This suggests a discrepancy between slideshow playback and recording mode behavior.

    Hi, David Paiko

This does sound like the recording window is not reading the animation sequence correctly, rather than a problem with the animations themselves, since they still work in normal Slide Show mode.

Besides the solutions provided by the Q&A Assist, here are some suggestions you can try:

It is recommended that you test the older/classic recording path if available: enable the Recording tab, then use Record Slide Show from there instead of the newer Record interface. Also try changing one test animation from On Click to After Previous or With Previous, then record again. This helps check whether the issue is only with manual click triggers in Record mode.

If you mainly need the final video, the most practical workaround is to play the presentation normally using Slide Show from Beginning, then capture it with a screen recorder instead of PowerPoint Record mode. Since the animations work there, the recording should capture what you actually see.

If the same problem happens in a brand-new file and another Windows profile, I would also report it through Microsoft Support or Feedback Hub, as that points more to a PowerPoint recording-mode problem than a file issue.

Thank you for your patience in reading, I hope this information has been helpful to you.

The described behavior is not documented in the provided context as a known or fixed issue for PowerPoint recording modes. The only closely related known issue in the context for PowerPoint video/recording is specific to camera capture over RDP, not to animations failing during recording.

Because no official cause or workaround for “animations not triggering in Record mode but working in Slide Show mode” is present in the context, no supported explanation or fix can be provided here.
