    Hi Paul Rudovsky,

If most Excel files open on Mac but a few will not, it’s usually something specific to those files (temporary file, name/path, location permissions, or minor corruption), not your whole Excel install.

Please try these quick steps in order:

1.) Check the filename is not a temporary file

If it starts with an underscore like _Filename.xlsx, it can be a temporary file, not a real workbook. Look for the matching file without the leading underscore.

2.) Copy locally and simplify the name

    • Copy the problem file to your Desktop (local storage) and try opening it from there.
    • Rename it to a short name using only letters/numbers (no special characters), then try again.

3.) Shorten the folder path (deep folders can block opens)

If the file is buried in many subfolders, move it higher up or shorten folder/file names. Long paths can prevent Office files from opening, including Excel.

4.) If it opens in Excel for the web, re-save a clean copy

Open it online, make a tiny edit, then save/download a new copy to your Mac and open that new copy. This can clear minor corruption that affects the desktop app.

5.) Update Office and macOS, then restart

Being fully up to date is a common fix path for “file format/extension not valid” type open errors on Mac.

If updates are stuck, reinstall AutoUpdate and run it again

If none of these work, those specific workbooks are likely damaged, and restoring a previous version (if you have version history) or getting a fresh copy is usually the fastest resolution.

If you paste the exact error message you see for one of the failing files (and whether it opens on the web), I can help you narrow it down to the most likely cause.

Some Excel files not opening while others do is typically caused by either an unsupported file format, file corruption, or a known Excel bug that has been fixed in newer builds.

    Use these checks and fixes:

    1. Check file type and where it’s opened
    • If these problem files are being opened on a mobile device (iPad/iPhone/Android), some formats only open read‑only or not at all. For example, on Android:
      • .xlsx and .xlsb: open and edit
      • .xls, .csv, .ods: open read‑only only
      • Many other formats (.xltx, .xltm, .xml, .txt, .htm, etc.) can’t be opened at all
    • If the files are in one of the unsupported types on the device in use, open them on desktop Excel and save as a modern .xlsx workbook, then try again on the device.
    1. Update Excel to the latest version
    • There is a known issue where Excel prompts for access or shows that it cannot open .xlsx because the format or extension is not valid, and Excel may hang or require force‑quit.
    • This issue is fixed in Excel version 16.34 and later. Install the latest Office updates and then retry opening the affected files.
    1. Check for file corruption / mismatched extension
    • If Excel reports that the file format or extension is not valid, the workbook may be corrupted or the internal format may not match the extension.
    • Follow the guidance in “Repair a corrupted workbook” (linked from the context) to attempt recovery.
    • If the file came as an email attachment and shows as a different format than its extension, save it locally first and open from Excel. If that still fails, ask the sender to resend it as an Excel Binary Workbook (.xlsb) or Excel 97–2003 Workbook (.xls) and then open that version.
    1. If Excel opens but shows blank or errors
    • If Excel starts but shows a blank screen instead of the file, check for hidden sheets (View → Unhide) or reset file associations as described in the context.
    • If Excel reports that a document caused a serious error last time, remove it from the Disabled Items list so it can be opened again.

If only specific files consistently fail while others open, focus on:

    • Their file type (especially if opened on mobile),
    • Whether Excel is fully updated (at least 16.34 on Mac), and
    • Whether those files may be corrupted or have mismatched extensions.
