On iPad, Outlook for iOS relies on modern authentication and a working network connection to sync and download email. When messages are not downloading, the most common causes are:
- Authentication or account issues
- If the account was added using basic/legacy authentication or via a non-Microsoft mail app, remove the account from Outlook on the iPad and add it again using the built-in Outlook.com (or appropriate provider) option so it uses modern authentication.
- If using a non-Microsoft email app instead of Outlook, verify with that app’s support that it supports modern authentication for EAS/POP/IMAP/SMTP. If it does not, install and use the Outlook app instead. Outlook can be downloaded for free from the iOS App Store.
- Browser/auth cache issues affecting sign-in
- If Outlook sign-in or token refresh is failing due to cached data in Safari (which Outlook uses for some sign-in flows), clear Safari data:
- Open Settings on the iPad.
- Go to Safari.
- Tap Clear History and Website Data.
- Restart the iPad.
- Open Outlook again and, if prompted, sign in to the email account.
- Use Outlook for reliable sync
- If using another email app and it cannot be made to work with modern authentication, install Outlook for iOS and add the account there. Outlook supports modern authentication and is the recommended app for Outlook.com and Microsoft 365 accounts.
If email still does not download after these steps, remove the account from Outlook on the iPad and re-add it using the Outlook app’s Add Account flow, ensuring the correct provider (for example, Outlook.com) is selected.
