    Hi Liz Vacca,

I’m really sorry this happened. I can understand how upsetting and stressful it is to lose an important task by accident, especially when the information was valuable to you.

Microsoft To Do tasks can only be recovered if they’re still available in the Outlook Deleted Items folder under the same account. Since you’ve already checked and the task isn’t appearing there, it means the task has unfortunately been permanently removed (for example, if Deleted Items was emptied or the retention period has passed).

At this point, there isn’t a supported way to restore the task through Outlook or Microsoft To Do once it no longer appears in Deleted Items.

For the future, you might consider keeping especially important details backed up in Notes, OneNote, or another reference app, just in case something similar happens again.

I know this isn’t the outcome you were hoping for, and I really empathize with how disappointing this must feel. If you have any other questions or would like suggestions for managing important tasks going forward, please don’t hesitate to reply. I’m here to help.

Microsoft To Do tasks are stored in Exchange Online and surface in Outlook, so recovery is only possible if the deleted task still exists in the mailbox’s Deleted Items folder and has not been permanently removed.

Use these steps to try to recover it:

    1. Open Outlook that is connected to the same account used in Microsoft To Do (new Outlook, classic Outlook, Outlook on the web, or Outlook.com).
    2. Switch to Mail and open the Deleted Items folder.
    3. Search or scroll in Deleted Items for an item with the title of the deleted task.
    4. When the task is found, restore it:
      • Right‑click (or tap and hold) the item and choose Restore.
      • The task will be placed back into its original list in To Do.

If the task does not appear anywhere in Deleted Items, it means it has already been removed from that folder (for example, the folder was emptied or the item aged out under mailbox retention). In that situation, the task cannot be recovered through Outlook or To Do.
