Last week, the Math Assistant function disappeared from my OneNote application. It has previously worked throughout the past year, but randomly disappeared. I am able to add it in a customized Ribbon, but the function remains greyed out and not functional. What do I need to do to re-enable this function?

Dear @Shughrue, David,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Based on your description, the Math Assistant feature in OneNote has disappeared and is now greyed out, even though it previously worked and can still be added to the ribbon. For better understanding your situation, could you please confirm me some information as:

Which version of OneNote you are using (OneNote desktop app or OneNote web version)?

Have you rechecked that you log in your education account instead of personal account?

In case you are using OneNote desktop app, try to uninstall and reinstall OneNote to check whether the issue still persists or not

Please understand that the more information you provide, the more effectively I can support

Looking forward to your update.

Math Assistant availability and usability depend on three main factors: app version, subscription, and Class Notebook restrictions.

    1. Confirm supported OneNote version
      • Math Assistant is only available in:
        • OneNote for the web
        • OneNote for Windows 10 / OneNote for Microsoft 365 (modern app)
      • It also requires a valid Microsoft 365 subscription.
      • If using an older desktop build that is not in this list, Math Assistant will not function even if the button is visible.
    2. Check if Math Assistant is restricted in a Class Notebook If working in a OneNote Class Notebook and the Math button is greyed out, the notebook owner may have disabled features:
      • In OneNote for Windows / iPad, the owner can go to Draw > Math Assistant to open the Set Math Assistant restrictions pane and toggle features on or off, then select Apply.
      • In OneNote for Windows 10 / OneNote Online, the Class Notebook owner can go to Draw > Math > Turn Math On or Off, then in the Math Options pane:
        • Set the timeout (or clear it),
        • Re‑select the checkboxes for solving/graphing features,
        • Select Apply.
      • If these features are turned off, students see Math Assistant greyed out or blocked until the timeout expires.
    3. Verify Math Assistant settings after re‑enabling
      • After Math Assistant is available again, create a math equation, then open Settings in the Math pane and confirm number/angle settings are valid for the type of problem being solved.

If the button is still greyed out after confirming the correct OneNote version, active Microsoft 365 subscription, and that no Class Notebook restrictions are applied, use OneNote for the web as a test. If Math Assistant works there but not in the desktop app, reinstalling or updating Office/OneNote is the next step.
