I am having some serious issues on OneNote.

My pages keep crashing/not responding nearly every single time I write something down. Then some sections display the message "This notebook is in read only mode because it is broken. Please copy the content into a new notebook and delete this one". At some point this message popped up on all of my sections basically breaking my whole notebook. So, I created a new one and started copying the content into the new one. However, i noticed it stopped syncing soon after. Then when i tried to manually sync the new notebook, it comes up with an error saying i need to copy it to yet again another section. I am beyond done with this.
I have uninstalled the app, I've tried deleting the sections (which do not get deleted), and I have tried resetting the app. I have signed out and back in again. I have tried deleting sections in the new notebook and resyncing to see if i was adding sections too fast. But nothing is happening.

I need access to these notes fast.

Please help me.

This issue is usually caused by notebook or local sync‑cache corruption. Simply copying sections into new notebooks or resetting the app often does not fix it, and can spread the corruption. Below is the most reliable way to recover your notes and restore sync.

First thing you need to do is secure your notes (don’t rely on sync) - Just follow the below steps:

  1. Install OneNote Desktop: https://www.onenote.com/download
  2. Open it → File → Open → OneDrive
  3. Open the affected notebook
  4. If it opens:
    • Go to File → Export
    • Export the entire notebook to a .onepkg file
    • If that fails, export section by section or copy page content into Word as a fallback

Please note that this step is critical. Do this before trying further fixes.

Now post this we need to clear the existing local cache as uninstalling or resetting the OneNote doesn't address this issue.

  1. Close OneNote completely
  2. Press Win + R and open:
%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneNote
  1. Delete everything in that folder
  2. Also check and delete (if present):
%localappdata%\Packages\Microsoft.Office.OneNote*
  1. Restart the PC

This removes the cached notebook metadata that repeatedly forces notebooks into read‑only mode.

Post this create a new notebook to test the sync:

  1. Open OneNote and sign in
  2. Create one new notebook
  3. Let it fully sync
  4. Test by typing a note, closing the app, reopening it, and syncing again

Please make sure to Prefer importing the .onepkg file using OneNote Desktop. If you are copying manually, do it page by page, not entire sections at once. Sync frequently and stop immediately if errors return.

Always remember copying “broken” sections spreads the problem!!
