Is there a way to download just the final grade percentage that is displayed by the student name on the screen- like a summary doc. When I download the assignments as an excel file it lists them in a way that is not helpful and does not list an overall total

In the Grades tab, the overall average grade is shown next to each student’s name, but the built-in export options do not provide a “final grade only” summary file.

Available options from the product behavior in context:

Export all grades for the class
- Go to the class team and select Grades.
- Select Export to Excel.
- This export includes first name, last name, email address, assignment title, points, and feedback for all assignments in the class, not just the final percentage.
- Filters (such as date range) applied in the gradebook affect what is exported, but there is no option in context to export only the final average shown by each student’s name.
Export grades for an individual student
- Go to Grades in the class team.
- Select a student’s name.
- Select Export to Excel.
- This export contains due date, assignment title, status, points, and feedback for that student, not just the overall total.
Use Insights for average grade data
- Insights calculates each student’s average grade based on points earned divided by total available points across assignments.
- From an Insights report, More options → Export to Excel exports an Assignments sheet (per-assignment grades) and a Summary sheet that provides each student’s average grade for that class over the selected time frame.
- This Summary sheet is the closest available “final grade percentage per student” export described in the context.

Based on the available documentation, exporting a simple list of only the final grade percentage directly from the Grades tab is not supported; instead, use an Insights Grades report export to get a summary sheet with each student’s average grade, or export the full gradebook and derive the final grade in Excel.

Delete or hide all columns except:

Format the final grade column as Percentage (Home > Number > %)

=AVERAGE(range) for equally weighted assignments
or a weighted formula, depending on your grading structure
Save it as a separate file, for example: Final Grade Summary.xltx

Once set up, this process only takes a few minutes and the template can be reused in the future. You can also find ready‑made Excel gradebook templates online that automatically calculate averages or weighted percentages. If you choose to do so, please ensure you download templates only from trusted sources.

each student's grade individually. Insights does help with this but when I sort in excel it rounds 2.8 to 3 and then places it in the 30 column so again something that should be relatively quick takes much longer- I am using the percentages to give student credit for an activity if they meet a certain value. There are a lot of students so I do not want to cut and paste everything individually

What you’re seeing is a formatting and rounding behavior in Excel. Excel is rounding for sorting/display purposes, which is why values like 2.8% appear as 3% and end up grouped incorrectly.

Since your goal is to give credit based on a threshold (rather than ranking students), the most reliable approach is to avoid sorting altogether and let Excel evaluate each student individually.

If the exported grade values are stored in Excel as true decimal percentages, you may try creating a new Final % column with:

=ROUND(your final grade cell,4)

Then format that column as Percentage with 2 decimal places. In Excel, percentage formatting displays decimal values as percentages, so a stored value such as 0.028 will display as 2.80%.

For your use case, you can also check directly whether each student meets your required threshold by using:

=IF(your final % cell>=0.3,"Credit","No Credit")

You can adjust the percentage in the formula to match your own grading threshold. For example, if your cutoff is 50%, use 0.5; if it is 75%, use 0.75, and so on. You can then filter by “Credit” to quickly identify qualifying students without needing to sort manually.

Please also keep in mind that this will work correctly only if the exported values are already stored as decimal percentages. If Excel is showing values such as 2.8 instead of 0.028, the data may need to be converted first before Percentage formatting will display it correctly.

A good way to calculate a final course grade is to use the weighting assigned to each assessment rather than simply averaging all the scores.

For example, if assignments are worth 30%, quizzes are worth 20%, and the final exam is worth 50%, each category should first be converted into its weighted contribution. These contributions can then be added together to determine the overall course grade.

It is also helpful to work backwards when planning for a final exam. If a student knows their current grade, the percentage already completed, and the weight of the final exam, they can calculate the minimum score required on the final to reach a particular target grade.

This approach can make grade planning much clearer because students can see exactly how much the final exam can affect their overall result.
