VS 2026 Updates

If the built‑in Visual Studio 2026 updater is not functioning, administrator updates can be applied and verified using standard enterprise tools instead of the VS Update Manager.

1. Obtain the update
   • Administrator security and critical updates for Visual Studio 2026 are published on the second Tuesday of every month to:
     • Microsoft Update Catalog
     • Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)
   • Quality and feature updates are available via Microsoft Update Catalog.
   • Enterprise admins can:
     • Download the update from Microsoft Update Catalog and run it directly on the client, or
     • Import the update into Configuration Manager (SCCM) and deploy it broadly.
2. Prerequisites on client machines
   • Ensure the Visual Studio Client Detector Utility is installed so administrator updates are recognized. It is:
     • Installed automatically with Visual Studio, and
     • Also available to independently deploy from Microsoft Update Catalog.
   • Visual Studio must be closed before installing the update; if VS is open, the update installation will be aborted.
3. Deploy the update without the VS Update Manager
   • Use WSUS or Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager to approve and deploy the Visual Studio 2026 administrator update to affected machines.
   • Alternatively, manually run the downloaded administrator update package from Microsoft Update Catalog on the client where the VS Update Manager is failing.
4. Verify that the update installed correctly Use one of these methods on the client:
   • In Visual Studio:
     1. Start Visual Studio 2026.
     2. Select Help > About.
     3. Confirm that the version number matches the last number in the title of the intended update (for example, 18.2.2 or 18.3.0 as listed in the release notes).
   • Using vswhere:

5. If problems persist
   • Review the client error codes documented under Applying Administrator Updates (error codes and conditions) to understand why the update is failing.
   • Use the Troubleshooting Visual Studio installation and upgrade issues guidance.
