I get this error message when I open my education outlook:

"Outlook cannot log on. Verify you are connected to the network and are using the proper server and mailbox name. The Microsoft Exchange service in your profile is missing required information. Modify your profile to ensure that you are using the correct Microsoft Exchange information service."

    Dear @Dan Zanger,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Based on your description, this error indicates that Outlook for Windows cannot connect to your education (Exchange) mailbox because the local Outlook profile contains missing or incorrect Exchange configuration information. This commonly occurs when the Outlook profile is corrupted or still referencing outdated server or Autodiscover settings.
Have you tried to switch to New Outlook to check whether the issue still persists or not?

Here are some troubleshooting steps you can refer to:

Verify mailbox access via Outlook on the web (OWA) Sign in to your education mailbox using Outlook on the web.

If OWA works but the desktop app does not, the issue is likely limited to the Outlook client or profile.

Try to create a new Outlook profile

    Close Outlook

Open Control Panel > Mail (Microsoft Outlook) > Show Profiles

Select Add to create a new profile

Add your education account and set the new profile as the default

    Restart Outlook

If the issue persists after creating a new profile and if Outlook on the web (New outlook) works but a newly created profile still shows the same error, the issue is likely on the server or tenant side. In this case, please contact your school’s IT administrator to verify:

The mailbox is active and properly provisioned

Autodiscover and Exchange configuration are correct

There are no recent migrations or changes impacting Outlook connectivity

I hope information above can meet your expectations, please feel free to reach out if you have any other questions.

The error indicates Outlook cannot connect to the Exchange server because the profile has incorrect or missing Exchange information, often after a change on the server side (for example, migration to Microsoft 365) or when the server name cannot be reached.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Confirm basic connectivity
      • Make sure the device is connected to the internet/network.
      • Sign in to Outlook on the web (for example, via the school’s portal). If web access works but the desktop app does not, the issue is with the Outlook profile or client configuration.
    2. Create a new Outlook profile A damaged or outdated profile (for example, still pointing to a pre‑migration server or an unreachable FQDN) can cause this exact error.
      • Close Outlook.
      • Open Control Panel → Mail → Show Profiles.
      • Add a new profile and configure the school/education account again.
      • Set the new profile as the default and start Outlook.
    3. Check with the school/tenant administrator
      • If the mailbox was recently migrated to Microsoft 365 or to a new Exchange server, the old Autodiscover or server name cached in the profile can prevent connection.
      • Ask the admin to confirm:
        • The mailbox is enabled and active.
        • The correct server/Autodiscover configuration for the education account.
        • That the Exchange server’s fully qualified domain name (FQDN) is reachable from the network.
    4. If still failing, have the admin check server‑side conditions The same error can occur if:
      • The Exchange server’s FQDN (for example, server.domain.local) is not accessible from the client.
      • The profile is pointing to a global catalog that is not an Exchange server.
      • Certain Exchange registry settings (such as No RFR Service on the mailbox server) are configured in a way that blocks Outlook from retrieving profile information. These checks must be done by the Exchange administrator on the server side.

If Outlook on the web works and a new profile still shows the same error, the problem is very likely on the Exchange/tenant side and needs administrator action.
