    Hello gin111!

Thank you for reporting this issue to the Q&A forum.

From what you shared, OneNote on your iPad Pro (iPadOS 26.4.1) opens to a blank or dark screen, and although a page may load briefly, switching between notebooks frequently causes it to go blank and require repeated restarts.

It appears that some other users have also been experiencing the same issue in recent days following this update.

OneNote goes blank on IPAD iPadOS 26.4.1 (23E254) when switching between applications

OneNote App on iPadOS is Glitching

So far, there hasn’t been any official announcement regarding this behavior. At this stage, my recommendation is to submit feedback directly to Microsoft so the issue can be tracked and prioritized by the product team. You can do this from within the app (if possible) or via Microsoft’s feedback portal. Since this is a user‑to‑user community forum, we can only share suggestions based on our findings and personal experiences.

In the meantime, please make sure to keep OneNote and your device up to date, so you don’t miss any patches or fixes as they become available.

If there are any new updates on this issue, I will be sure to post them back here.

Thank you so much for your patience!

Based on the described behavior after updating iPadOS, use the following steps to stabilize OneNote on iPad Pro:

    1. Confirm iPadOS and app version
      • Ensure iPadOS is fully up to date: Settings > General > Software Update.
      • Open the App Store, search for OneNote, and tap Update if available. This aligns with guidance that recent OneNote issues on iOS are often resolved by app or OS updates.
    2. Force-quit and restart OneNote
      • Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause to show the app switcher.
      • Swipe OneNote up to close it.
      • Reopen OneNote and test switching between notebooks.
    3. Close unused notebooks (reduces load and sync issues)
      • In OneNote for iOS, tap the Show Notebooks button until the Notebooks list appears.
      • Tap and hold each notebook not currently needed, then tap the Close Notebook icon at the bottom-left.
      • Exit and restart OneNote so the changes take effect. This can help if a particular notebook or section is causing the dark/blank behavior.
    4. Check for problematic sections or names
      • If the dark/blank screen appears only when switching to a specific notebook or section group, temporarily avoid that notebook and see if others work normally.
      • If a specific section group is involved, rename it to remove special characters (for example, remove symbols like "+") and test again. Similar sync issues have been resolved by removing special characters from section and section group names.
    5. Verify Dark Mode and display behavior
      • OneNote on iPad follows system appearance. Go to Settings > Display & Brightness and switch between Light and Dark to see if the “dark blank” screen is actually a rendering issue tied to Dark Mode.
      • While in OneNote, on the View tab, use Switch Background to toggle the page canvas between dark and light and see if content becomes visible.
    6. If the issue persists
      • After trying the above, if OneNote still frequently opens to a dark/blank screen or fails when switching notebooks, capture the behavior (screenshots, steps to reproduce) and contact Microsoft Support, as similar iOS/Mac OneNote issues have required product fixes delivered via updates.
