Cannot leave unknown-strange organization in Teams

Hi, I have an organization I have no idea how it is showing up in Teams but I cannot get rid of it. I have never created an organization and this is my personal account and never been linked to a business. I can see the organization in settings but the only toggle switch next to is is greyed out. This is greyed out both in the browser version of Teams as well as the Windows client. How can I get rid of this organization? See picture.. Thanks.

I had this issue, too.

The organization was not listed as a tenant in portal.azure.com. Thus, that was a dead end for me.

I contacted Microsoft Support and Erwyn helped with resolving the issue. He asked me to enable Teams Insider. I did so and then had to wait for and click on the upgrade and restart action in Microsoft Teams. Then I opened the Settings \ Accounts and Orgs screen and clicked on Decline on the unknown organization. This fixed the issue in the Desktop and Web client for Teams. I uninstalled and reinstalled Teams on my iPad and that resolved it there, too. Ideally, the Accept and Decline actions should appear on the personal profile, too.

Hi!

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

What you’re seeing in Microsoft Teams is actually not something you created, it means your email was added (or invited) to an organization tenant (in this case University of the Visayas). You cannot remove an organization from Teams yourself, only their admin can do it.

First, try and leave the organization manually by going to https://myaccount.microsoft.com/organizations and sign in with your personal account from there you should see: University of the Visayas, click it → select: Leave organization.

If the above method will not work, you need to contact the organization who invited you and request them to remove you from previous Teams invite, (you can show them your screenshot as proof)

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately looks like the login screen only accepts commercial tenant logons (this is a hotmail account).

After reviewing your case, this issue typically occurs when your email address has already been added as a guest user in another tenant, or when there is cached sign‑in or sharing information in the Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD) portal.

Since the Teams settings aren't letting you toggle it off, you’ll need to "eject" yourself from the organization's side via the Microsoft My Account portal.

How to Leave the Organization
- Log in to the My Groups Portal: Go to myaccount.microsoft.com/organizations.
- Sign In: Use the same personal account shown in your screenshot.
- Find the Organization: Look for University in the list of organizations.
- Leave Organization: Click "Leave organization" next to that entry. You may have to confirm a few prompts.
- Re-sign into Teams: After leaving, sign out of the Teams app completely and sign back in. The entry should disappear.

If it is still appearing (Caching Issues)

If you have successfully left the organization via the portal but it still shows up in the Windows client, the app is likely holding onto old "token" data.

Clear the Teams Cache:
- Close Teams completely (ensure it’s not running in the system tray).
- Press Windows Key + R, type %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams, and hit Enter.
- Delete all files and folders in that directory.
- Restart Teams.

Leave an Organization - Microsoft Entra External ID | Microsoft Learn

If you're using a personal account or email one-time passcode, you'll need to use a My Account URL that includes your tenant name or tenant ID. For example:

https://myaccount.microsoft.com?tenantId=contoso.onmicrosoft.com

or

https://myaccount.microsoft.com?tenantId=aaaabbbb-0000-cccc-1111-dddd2222eeee

*In this case, I see that you have the tenant name, so you can just replace the tenant name in the following URL: https://myaccount.microsoft.com?tenantId=_____ and open the URL in private mode (Ctrl + Shift + N).

After that, you can continue to follow steps 2 and 3 in the image below to leave the organization that you mistakenly joined.

If you can't leave this organization, you need to contact the global admin of this tenant and request them to remove you from their end (please double-check to see if you have received any email invitation from this organization so you can send them a request).
