A family of Microsoft products that enable users to capture, organize, and reuse notes electronically.
Hi @Tahlia,
Good day, and I appreciate the detailed description of your issue.
I understand how frustrating it is when a notebook syncs fine on OneNote for the web and tablet but won’t sync in the Windows desktop app. In most cases, that pattern points to a local desktop-client connection or cache issue, or a specific section blocking upload.
To help narrow this down, could you clarify a few details?
- Is this notebook stored in OneDrive or a SharePoint or Teams site?
- In OneNote desktop, does View Sync Status show one specific section failing, or the whole notebook?
- Are you signed into more than one account (school or work + personal) in OneNote on the PC?
- Do you see your latest edits in OneNote for the web?
- Are you using OneNote (Microsoft 365) or OneNote 2016 on Windows?
While we investigate, you can try these steps to force a fresh connection:
- Force a desktop re-sync: In OneNote desktop, go to File > Info, copy the notebook URL, and paste it into your browser. Once it opens, click Open in desktop app to refresh the link.
- Check sync status: Go to File > Info > View Sync Status, click Sync All, and note if a specific page or section is named in the error.
- Handle stuck sections: If one section is stuck (common with 0xE0000057), create a new section, move the pages into it, and try syncing again. Also, empty the Notebook Recycle Bin.
- Update OneNote: Go to File > Account > Update Options to ensure you are on the latest build.
Important: please do not to rely on sign-out or reinstall as a primary sync fix because it can risk losing any unsynced local changes. Only do that after confirming everything is safely visible online.
The error code 0xE000170D 4oxye generally points to a SharePoint configuration or security policy issue, such as sensitivity labels or Microsoft Information Protection (MIP) restrictions. Since these settings are managed at the organizational level, please contact your IT department. They can investigate the root cause and, if necessary, escalate the issue by opening a support ticket through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center.
Please let me know if these steps help resolve the connection or if you identify a specific section causing the block. I am happy to continue troubleshooting this with you once you have those details from the sync status.
