Hello, does Excel close right after opening or only when you open a file?

Open Excel, go to File, Options, Advanced, then scroll to Display and check Disable hardware graphics acceleration, select OK and restart Excel. If Excel does not stay open long enough, hold Ctrl while opening Excel to force Safe Mode, then apply the same setting. This turns off graphics acceleration which often causes sudden app crashes.

Try these steps in order to fix Excel 2019 quitting unexpectedly while Word still works:

    1. Make sure Office is fully updated
Install all available Office updates first. Many "stopped working" and crash issues are fixed by the latest builds.
    2. Start Excel in Safe Mode to check add-ins
Faulty add-ins can cause Excel to close unexpectedly.
      1. Select the Search icon in Windows and type run, then open the Run app.
        • On Windows 10/8.1/8: right-click Start and choose Run.
        • On Windows 7: select Start > Run.
      2. Type:
              excel /safe

        and press Enter.
      3. If Excel opens and stays open in Safe Mode (title bar shows “Microsoft Excel (Safe Mode)”), disable add-ins:
        • Go to File > Options > Add-Ins.
        • In the Manage box, choose Excel Add-ins (or COM Add-ins) and select Go.
        • Uncheck one add-in, select OK, then restart Excel normally.
        • Repeat until the crashing stops to find the problematic add-in.
      4. If Excel does not start in Safe Mode, skip to step 3.
    3. Repair the Office installation (full Online Repair)
If all Office apps are affected or Safe Mode does not help, perform a full repair:
      1. Close all Office apps.
      2. Open Settings in Windows.
      3. Go to AppsInstalled apps (or Apps & features).
      4. Find Microsoft Office / Microsoft 365 / Office 2019 in the list.
      5. Select it → Modify → choose Online Repair and confirm.
      6. Let the repair complete (can take 15–30 minutes), then restart the PC and try Excel again.
    4. If repair does not help: uninstall and reinstall Office
If Excel still quits unexpectedly after Online Repair:
      1. Uninstall Office from SettingsAppsInstalled apps (or Programs and Features).
      2. Restart the computer (not just shut down).
      3. Sign in to the Microsoft account used to purchase Home & Student 2019 and reinstall Office from there.

If Excel continues to crash after these steps, collect any error messages or Windows Event Viewer entries and contact Microsoft Support with those details.
