Hi,
What you’re seeing is Excel’s “Select Objects” mode turned on. In this mode, clicking and dragging draws a box instead of selecting cells.
Here’s how to turn it off (and keep it off):
Quick Fix
- Go to the Home tab.
- On the far right, click Find & Select.
- If Select Objects is highlighted, click it to turn it off.
Even Faster
- Press
Escon your keyboard — this immediately exits that mode.
Why it happens
This mode sometimes gets activated accidentally (especially via keyboard shortcuts or toolbar clicks), and Excel doesn’t always make it obvious.
Make sure it stays off
There’s no permanent “disable forever” toggle, but:
- Just avoid clicking Find & Select → Select Objects
- If it happens again, Esc is the fastest resetWhat you’re seeing is Excel’s “Select Objects” mode turned on. In this mode, clicking and dragging draws a box instead of selecting cells. Here’s how to turn it off (and keep it off):
